Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Baltimore, Boston, Washington, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland, SLC, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Tacoma subscribers can expect a November 1st launch of UMTS providing average download data speeds of at least 220-320 kbps or higher. This will also include HSDPA zones within those cities.

Also, the csp site is unlocked for the time being (its said to be for training for reps) so you can check it quick before its locked up again

Just FYI, if you're trying to find out which specific areas have HSDPA, good luck. I've been looking around CSP since 8:00 and still have no clue. Almost 3 hours and still have nothing. Hopefully, more will be unlocked soon.

Don't be too sure. This is just immediate training. They said roughly 20 cities by Jan 1, 2006. So it may squeeze by before then. However, if that is the case, the plan is to continue at this pace to other cities throughout the four quarters next year. And pitt seems like a good market to hop into with this. Denveris in the same boat, as well as Los Angeles. Even NYC is missing. I think its the market size that is causing the holdup. Obviously they dont wanna put up a half-finished network in such a large market zone. Dont wanna screw it up.

It just seems really odd because VZW rolled out EVDO and Pittsburgh was one of the first to have it. Pittsburgh is a VERY competitive wireless market. At one point, in the late 90's, it was the most competitive wireless market in the entire country.

And (I could be VERY wrong about this) I think AT&T was beginning to put UMTS in the Pgh area when the buyout happened. So, if that is the case, one would think it wouldn't be to hard to finish the job.

this job was more of a spur of the moment rush from top brass and rushed out from there. if you notice, there are a bunch of western cities in that list. why? because of the new towers built with umts ready to go. they built more towers out west because the blue towers werent enough and everyone knows cingular is weaker in the west than the east. but the plan was to hit up the big markets quick (LA, NY, Pitt, etc) but in that big of a rush, its all modifying old towers, whereas the new towers that are going in anyway can be set up for it standard. its not a surprise, but more of a disappointment. an understandable disappointment. but have no doubt that they are working quickly for the large areas.

This is only a test run of UMTS. If things go well and the demand is high there will be more cities added quickly. Cingular has put in UMTS towers in every major market. They are just going to start with these fifteen markets. They have a lot of products they want to test on UMTS.

good point. its not guaranteer that all markets will get it (although we can assume). And, again, they dont want to screw it up in huge competitive markets like nyc, la, pitt, denver, etc
