The story continues...

I cancelled service with 2 other lines, leaving one line on Cingular. He wanted to stay because a lot of his friends are there, so, oh well. He doesn't use it much so the service issues don't really bother him, I guess. What really helped me to make this decision was that this one guy I spoke to gave me a $100 credit, for all the problems. The last few people I spoke with were really nice. I kind of wish I could stay, but I do need something at least semi-reliable.

I got a 0 deposit when I was 18. Credit is inherited so if your parents had good credit, it helps. Tell him to get a credit card and hold a balance on it and make payments for 3 months.

Creit isn't inherited. Baldness is. Big noses are. Not credit. It's a dopey score based on how far you are in debt and if you're ever late on your payments. Doesn't take into consideration income or even having a job.
