Someone here explain to me why Cingular doesn't get service in the metro, and how Verizon has sole control of the subway in washington DC?

What is Cingular doing about it if anything?

Thanks in advance.

Last time this subject was brought up it was said that Verizon had exclusive permission to install antennas in the metro. No other carrier was given that permission. However, it was also said that other carriers would soon be able to install their own antennas and that Cingular would have coverage in the metro soon after they were given the go ahead.

So the answer, I would say, is that nobody but Verizon was permitted to have it there.

Any idea how long ago this was and/or dates as to when cingular or other carriers will have access would be great. I have Verizon right now, but would love to switch to another carrier, but stick with Verizon because of their subway coverage.

Sorry, I couldn't really tell you.

The most I can say is that as soon as permission is given, Cingular will have service there. That is an enormous thorn in their side for the D.C. area that they would love to get rid as soon as possible.

I don't know the statistics in DC, but I have to imagine that most non-business phones are Verizon.

That is probably accurate, because D.C. lies in Verizon Corp. territory which is usually a pattern it follows.

If that's true, Cingular is not far behind because of how strong AT&T was in Washington DC.

Correct. Much of the northeast is this way because even after the breakup of AT&T, Bell Atlantic (Verizon) and AT&T were both a huge presence in the region.

The reason Verizon works in metro is simple. In 1987 Metro (WAMATA) signed an agreement with Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems to equip the underground portion of the subway with radiax. As part of the install the carrier that was allowed access (BAMS) also had to build the system to carry the infastructure of the WAMATA (Metro) radio system.

SBC-Cellular One could roam underground. ATT could do so too in analog mode. Now, I believe, only Verizon and Sprint (as a roamer) and other CDMA roamers can use the system.

I do not know if it still supports UMTS analog.

Verizon is a product of a merger and the one company that was granted the contract for the communications in the Metro system was Bell Atlantic-NYNEX Mobile. It was an extensive contract with very few loopholes to move to another provider since the MOU's ...
