COuld I use the Motorola A840 as my cingular phone? I'm looking for better network coverage.

No, even thought it's half a GSM phone that phone was made to be used under the frequencies 900MHz and 1800MHz. Those are not the frequencies we use here in the US. We use 850MHz and 1900MHz. That phone was reeleased by verizon to be used abroad, since CDMA is not as widely available as GSM in other countries.
