Hey all.... I am currently a Cingular customer with the T616 and I was wondering the whole deal on switching phones (unlocked ones?) without neccessarily having to deal with Cingular. For example if i wanted to get a GSM phone off of ebay or something can I just pop in the SIM card and have it work? How will I know witch ones would work and which ones wouldn't? I have heard stories of how Cingular SIM cards only work in Cingular phones... is this true? Thanks!

You can definately switch your SIM card with no problem. There are a couple of limitations to think about. Cingular carries the Moto V400 and V600 which come unlocked even though they are branded by Cingular. I think the Treo Handspring is also unlocked. Don't quote me on that.

However if you put your card in a strickly 1900 Mhz phone, and your market runs on 850, you may have roaming issues. If your phone says Cingular Extend in your home area, then you are roaming. Unless you want to call customer service month after month, to address this, I wouldn't bother. European version of GSM phones run off ...
