UMTS network / phone launch

With January right around the corner, it is probable to think that the UMTS network launch is coming anytime soon? Along with that, the phones to launch with it, like the Samsung zx10 is supposted to be one of them.

This might be a tough question to add to that, but does anyone know what kind of UMTS or HSDPA coverage we will have..large coverage, or just 16 cities for now...?

I still don't even have EDGE yet here in my city... 😕 (Zip code: 28305). And my signal isn't the best... ☚ī¸ (I'm always roaming off of Suncom, 310-490). 🙄 Maybe there will be some new networks built since there will be 30,000 more soldiers coming to Fort Bragg in the next couple of years..

my Nokia 6230, Treo650, SE S710a, SE Z500a, and V551 are all running at EDGE speeds. Although the v551 is the slowest, I use them as modems on my pc.

So you are using your phones as a modem. How does Cingular charge you for that? do you have to add a data plan to your phone?

not on the Treo650 or the IPAQ. the $19.99 will only run well on the Audiovox or HTC 2125. 😁

plus the 19.99 will not let you connect to your pc as a modem. I've tried. The $19.99 is only set up for MediaNet really.

It will work u just have to manually configure the setting in the software to match the phone's Internet settings. If u have a nokia phone use the nokia PC suite software and choose to set your setting manually. If u have a nokia 6682 it will connect u at about 115 kbps. Trust me I am not supposed to tell everyone this stuff but oops I just did.

They've been selling UMTS data service using pcmcia cards in D/FW for about a month now. The network is launched. No phones using it yet, though. From a marketing standpoint, this makes sense. The real money is in the heavy data users and Cingular has to get a product on the market to compete with Verizon's EVDO ...
