It is all based on your credit rating. The reason you have a large deposit is probably because you have no credit, seeing as you just turned 18. For now, there really isn't anything you can do about it.
In the long run, if you have a debit card that can be used as a credit card, run it as credit every time you use it. What this will do is build up, very quickly, a ton of valid credit purchases that will earn you credit. Other than that, just make sure you always pay any bills in your name and return your movie rentals and the like.
Credit is not something you can just get and it will take a while, but it is worth it.

Wrong!!
Debit cards ran as a credit do not build credit. Your bank does not report these purchases to the credit bureaus.
What builds credit is loans ( mortgage, student, car and personal), or credit cards. That is it. Your utlity and other bills do not report.
Since his credit check is good for 3 months, try again in April.

really helpful..
anyway, if your 18, chances are you won't get a "full" credit card.
Apply for a secure card, (put a 250.00 deposit on it) and use it as a credit card. After 6 mo, you'll get an increase (based on your spending). After the 6 mo mark is when the credit company begins reporting your payment history. As long as you remain in good standing you'll build your credit score.
Keep in mind I'm not talking about a pre-paid debit card, they are two different animals. Go to visa.com and apply for a secure card that way...

get a job for at least 6 months. debit cards do not help either. 6 months on your job helps you tax-id # look good which is related to you ss#, thats used to pull credit. trust me. i know. can't say how but i do.
also if mom n dad have bad credit you will have to work twice as hard.

Get a credit card at a department store or a gas station company (if it is a combo with a mastercard/visa, all the better since you can use it at other places). Make a charge on it each month and PAY IT OFF EVERY MONTH! While carrying a balance and making ontime payments can be good, its definitely not good to get into the habit of having credit card debt at 18. You may only get a $100 limit to start, but after 6 months or so of charges and on time payments, your credit score will go up. Get a copy of your credit report at annualcreditreport.com, to make sure that no one has hijacked your ssn and opened bogus accounts on it. If you are going to college and are getting student loans, that will go on your score once you start repaying. L...
