i just switched from an at&t family plan to one with cingy. we kept our numbers but now all 3 lines show my name, the owner of the acct, on a land line caller id. i called cingy to have it changed back to the way it was and was told it can't be done. are you telling at&t could have all 3 lines show the name of the person for each phone and that cingy can't? tell me the customer care rep was mistaken!

All the phones are supposed to be listed under the account holders name. That's the way it's been since I started this job, up until at least Tuesday when I asked my account exec to verify that it was still the policy. All the numbers will either display the account holder's name, the name "wireless caller", or we can block all data sent.
If you do find someone who changes the names for you, they are breaking policy and should lose their job.

that's crazy. especially when you have a family plan.

I think it is a lack of capability, not policy decisions. Cingular's system as long as I have been involved cannot make this change.

I don't think it is a matter of policy not to do so, I think it is a lack of capability.

I've seen a few accounts that have it changed, which is what prompted me to ask my RAE if anything changed. On POS2 there's a spot for "Wireless Name" where I've seen different names than the account name. All I could do is shrug my shoulders and say that shouldn't be, but I know we're definitely not supposed to do it.

You can have the account name changed, but it only changes the name on the bill. I do that quite often.
...
I can change the attention line on the bill, but that's all. I'm not sure what the "wireless caller" field affects.

This is a parameter that should be able to be changed, & if Cingular does not do this it's a choice & not truly something of which they're not capable. (Keep in mind I'm not talking about the hard working Cingular Rep, I'm talking about those who can make decisions on what reps are allowed to do) I know that when I was with T-Mobile we could change this for each line on an account. The on-line rep may not have the access, however that does not mean that it can't be changes.
Regarding firing a person who would change this - if this is Cingular's policy to not allow customers to make this change & someone does, I can see being disciplined for violation of company policy. Of course, saying this, my opinion is that it's wrong for Cingular to...

exactly...i couldn't have said it better!

Yes...it can be done. More than likely you will need to speak with tech support, they have access to program called CNAM that can change the caller ID name that will be listed.
Hope this helps!

Actually the change was made about 4 to 5 years ago with all companies that made caller ID have to show either wireless caller or the account holder's name. The reason being that it was too easy for a customer service rep to get mad at a customer and change the Caller ID to whatever ugly name they wanted.
There were many lawsuits and from what we were told at the time is the FCC changed the rules to regulate Caller ID so these kinds of issues would stop. This happened while I was at Sprint and every company changed at the same time. When you switched from ATT to Cingular, the systems automatically send the Caller ID information to the landline switches and it moves it to the account holder's name. People are not suppose to change the Cal...

After seeing this, I called and asked if they could change the name on my other line that my wife uses to her name and they said yes they do this all the time, I was on hold for a few and when she came back, she said I should give it a try and it worked. My phone shows my name and my wife hers.

Is this something that happens on certain markets? Only on Fam Talk Plans?
I ask because whenever I call a landline my name doesn show on their caller ID 😡 . It only shows "Wireless Caller" and my number.... 😕
