Is Cingular trying to force customers off of TDMA service?
...
Pretty much...they are supposedly phasin out the GAIT phones which are the only new phones that can use TDMA..so when u get a new phone u will have to get GSM

Forester and Britney,
Yes Cingular is gradually starting to phase out TDMA. Also, In most markets, you can't get a new GAIT phone either. The reason....CIngular's GSM footprint is expanding at an exponential rate. Cingular has invested in hundreads of millions of dollars to throw these towers up, left and right. With the acquistion of ATT and roaming agreements with T-mobile, you will find by the end of the year that Cingular will have covered 75-80% of the continental US. GSM will never become the defacto standard that AMPS was. Due to that it will never get the penetration that AMPS had. For people like myself, that travel ALL over the country, Cingular will not be the choice. I recently canceled my Cingular service when my 6340i burned up the SIM card. Before that I was throughly disgusted by the service in the 850 mhz transition markets. Echoes, low volume, clicks, and other noises. At the same time I also had a Sprint PCS 3588i that I now use exclusively on a Free & Clear America plan. No roaming, LD and a larger coverage area than Cingular, ATTWS, T-Mobile, Nextel, Verizon (even though I roam on a lot of Verizon systems). I now have the best service I have ever had (since 1995)with SPCS.

sorry you feel that way about cingular, for me, i would never have anyone else. to me, the cingular 1900 mhz gsm service is untouchable by sprint or any other cdma carrier that uses AMPS 800...the call quality is superior to any other carrier i have ever used.
