Cingular Policy Mystery

In the past two weeks, I have been trying to resolve an issue with Cingular and cannot get a straight definitive answer. I closed my Cingular account in December because I was going to be out of the country indefinitely. I was charged ETF fees and paid them as I didn't know when I would be back. I returned on Feb 1. I called Cingular, told them my situation, and asked if I could open up my account again. I was told that I would have to start new and was asked if I would like to order a phone and new service again. I told them I would think about it as I wanted to shop around. I went to a Wal-Mart store and when they tried to process a new phone and service, it was rejected because their system said I had an account with Cingular close...

It is Cingular policy to make an adjustment for an ETF for voluntarily cancelled accts as long as service is resumed within 60 days of cancellation. When you call back just tell the CSR to search for "resume service on a cancelled account" in our research tool. That's terrible that the previous agent did not even bother to look the policy up. By the way, since you cancelled on December 14th you really need to do this right away. Also, if you wanted that etf back you would be limited to your original equipment upgrade options if you also wanted to upgrade. 😳

Go into a corp store.. you'll be able to sign up with new service, but that would not get your etf back. (they will have to call the activations dept)

If you are happy with the phone you have, you can go to a store and they will get ahold of the right department and get it reactivated, and have the etf's refunded.. but you only get 60 days, so make it quick.

Where are you located?

I am located in South Florida. I appreciate the help. I thought the policy was 60 days. As I previously stated, the ETF fees are irrelevant as I sold the phones I had. So I would have to buy new ones at regular price because I am not eligible for an upgrade. To me it would have been just as well to just get new service with free phones and forget the ETF fees I paid. It's like 6 of one and half-dozen the other. Net result would probably be the same. I just wanted to find out the policy and make a good decision based on that. I will probably just wait till next week when the 60 days run out and then I can get new service anywhere. So thanks for the info.
