AT&T, BellSouth to Merge

AT&T Inc. and BellSouth Corporation have announced an agreement to merge the two companies, a combination that will create a more effective and efficient provider in the wireless, broadband, video, voice and data markets.

The merger will streamline the ownership and operations of Cingular Wireless, which is jointly owned by AT&T and BellSouth. The new company will be more innovative, nimble and efficient, providing benefits to customers by combining the Cingular, BellSouth and AT&T networks into a single fully integrated wireless and wireline Internet Protocol network offering a full range of advanced solutions.

As a result, the combined company will be better...

At the completion of the deal, which is expected to close within a year, all the landline and wireless businesses will exist under the sole brand name of AT&T, the companies said.

I wonder how the former At&T customers who were forced to migrate via pressure tactics will feel about this.

They should feel indifferent. Changing the name was not the issue with migrations, it was changing the network, the plans, and the biling.

I'm not so sure that there won't be some form of pyschological stigma associated with it.

Why do you have so much disdain for AT&T and Cingular?

Because I'm old enough to remember the effects At&T can and has had and am not foolish enough to think this merger is a benevolent move to increase services while reducing cost to customers.

I remember and see now the very trends that people rallied against. I see the regulation that these telecoms including At&T are trying to force through government and it sickens me.

There are many books that address the "crossroads" we have and are coming to regarding technology, mega-corporations, and the detrimental effects it has on consumers and government.

I have...

The big bad AT&T of the past that you are thinking of has nothing to do with the current at&t. The present day at&t is just SBC with a new name.

"Migrating, for the most part, was only beneficial to the customer."

Um, I don't think so. I was with AT&T Wireless and so were my friends, we lost our 1000 minutes for $40/month. Also when we changed over we had to pay an $18 "upgrade" fee. I told the representative that that upgrade fee was total ****. What was I upgrading to, is what I asked him and he said "Because the AT&T phones are old and you need to upgrade to the new Cingular phones and network. I told him he was bullshit and he insisted that it was because their Cingular network was GSM and tried to get technical, but AT&T was GSM as well. He had no answer really.

So my point is that since they are going to change BACK to AT&T Wireless, I better not have to pay another upgr...

Cingular offered to waive that fee for anybody willing to make the mover sooner rather than later. Holding off on your AT&T plan (although I know it was good) is the reason you missed out.

I was with AT&T and had a rather good plan, but...

AT&T Wireless is NOT returning -- only the name at&t. The only thing that is really changing other than the name is that the complete control over Cingular will be in the hands of the company that was formerly known as SBC. If you want to return to Cingular (soon to be at&t) just because of the name that is just silly.

Judging by some of the terse statements Cingular made when Whiteacre indicated Cingular's name would be dropped in favor of at&t a few weeks ago I would expect to see some, umm, management changes with Cingular. I doubt Whiteacre appreciated Cingular's official response. Cingular upper management is as bad as Bellsouth's.
