Unlocked GSM Phone

Question for those of you that have an unlocked GSM phone with Cingular.

If an unlocked GSM phone is purchased from a third party website like tigerdirect.com.

When I receive the phone and call Cingular to activate it and get a service plan do I need to sign any contracts or am I going to be contract free since I purchased the equipment myself.

Thanks

David

absolutely false.

You can get all of the current plans w/o free MTM. MTM would be an extra $10 per month if you want no contract.

some sales people may lie and tell you that you need one...they say its in thier policy, but from a technical standpoint, you don't need one. You can go month to month, but you will not get promo minutes like mobile to mobile so expect a crap plan.

Thanks for the info. Seems like mixed answers though. Im sure if I call Cingular they will tell me I need a contract. It's nice Cingular is GSM and you can use a variety of unlocked GSM phones but I am sure they prefer people buying the phones they sell.

Well I'll continue to wait for more responses to this before I call them. Thats my last option. Dont feel like dealing with a phone rep.

Thanks!

I called Cingular when I was wondering what was up with the E2. I spoke with the rep, and she said I needed a contract no matter what to start service, even if I already had a phone. I then asked her to ask a supervisor, and then she did a 180. I don't think she was new, but just wanted a sale. Don't let them give you lip. If you think that you think something doesn't sound right, ask for a sup. Simple as that. You should be able to go month to month tho, even if it isn't advertised, heck, Sprint even lets you do it, and they suck the big one!

Thanks for the info.

Another question. I see when ordering an Unlocked phone such as the V3i it does not come with a SIM card.

If I called Cingular and they agreed to give me month to month service with no contract since I have my own V3i where and how would I get a SIM card compatible with Cingular's service?

Most likely you would have to buy one for $25.

This was already posted in another thread and is quoted from internal resource tool (CSP) dated 3/16/06

'Customers who do not sign up for a promotional rate plan AND elect to pay the "no commitment" pricing for the handset or activate with their own equipment, are not required to accept a termed service agreement'

YOU DO NOT NEED A CONTRACT... Period.

Its kinda sad not every one is on the same page.

I agree it is pretty damn sad that everyone cant agree on the contract.
you do not have to sign a contract to start service if you have your own equipment . unless you want a m2m plan ... with that said goodluck trying to find any commisioned sales person that will take the time to set and account for you knowing damn well their not going to make a dime off of you .That is why you get mixed answers. Ask anyone in customer service if you need a contract to start service, Then ask any sales person that same question you will get 2 different answers
1 more thing dont call telesales to place your order go to your local cor store and try fishing

Cingular pays your dealer principal $25 to do a no commitment contract. You are right, most likely that $25 is not filtered to store reps.

Preface: I realize this will bring the "down with the mighty evil empire" rant...but I'm just giving another piece of information:

When I walk into my local Wal-Mart or Sam's Club, I see phones with 3 prices. For example:

With 2 year contract = $50
With 1 year contract = $120
With no contract = $250

So, they just flat out tell you on their phone display that you don't need a contract. I don't know about the plan differneces if you get M2M or not.
