i have an old SIM card from an overseas carrier and i would like to view the contacts saved on it. i *do not* need to make calls or anything like that. i was thinking i could insert that sim into one of the many extra cingy phones i have lying around. do i need to unlock the phone first?

also, what websites are reliable for unlocking gsm phones, and what is a normal price? if anyone has had particulary good experience with a site pls let me know.

It is unlikely that you will even be able to access any info on the SIM in a locked phone. If you are a Cingular customer and purchased your current phone through a cingular store or online and have been a customer for 90 days, you should call cingular cs and ask for technical support. They can give you the unlock code after verifying your eligibility.

There are now sim card readers that you can buy. Normally, these are sold so that you can backup your contacts, but it will help you with what you need, IF you are willing to spend a few bucks. It'll probably cheaper than getting a phone unlocked.
