From the USA Today:

"The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — MOST OF WHOM HAVE NEVER BEEN SUSPECTED OF ANY CRIME. The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY."

Qwest is only only company that tried to do the right thing, go to the court to be sure what NSA was doing was legal, but NSA wouldn't let them. Then NSA tryed to blackmail Qwest if they didn't go along, amazing.

The government is starting to look too much like the KGB.

Trying to put pressure on Qwest, NSA representatives pointedly told Qwest that it was the lone holdout among the big telecommunications companies. It also tried appealing to Qwest's patriotic side: In one meeting, an NSA representative suggested that Qwest's refusal to contribute to the database could compromise national security, one person recalled.

In addition, the agency suggested that Qwest's foot-dragging might affect its ability to get future classified wo

the nsa has been collecting those records for years. nothing new here. just like there are 3 different credit agencies colleting information about your money usage habits. if the nsa collecting phone records shocks you, you would be amazed at the information retailers in general collect about you.

AT&T and Bellsouth will do ANYTHING for a buck -- I'm sure the gov't just paid them some cool cash so that their bottom lines look a little better with very little work. Kudos to Qwest! I'd switch today if it was available here.

Ya'll are crazy. What the hell are you afraid of? If you're scared of something like this you need to take some med's and get your priorities straight. Were you this scared of your mother when you were 9 and it seemed like she had eyes in the back of her head? If you're not doing anything to endanger your fellow citizen you've got nothing to worry about. Stop worrying about Uncle Sam finding out you're burning a dooby on your lunch break or using your phone to score some weed. This stuff is, to put it bluntly, finding people who want to kill you. They don't care about you're dubious liazons and they don't track them or your BS calls.

1st off tapping cell and telephones won't stop what happened on 9/11. Read the documents of 9/11 report. The terrorists used INTERNET websites to communicate to each other. Again what does cell phone and INTERNET have to do w/ each other? Nothing really, just the government to waste time and money like they have been doing on the "WAR on Terror". And where have we gotten to? basically the same spot when we first arrived w/ more soldiers dieing for a greedy war.

Terrorists didn't really outsmart the government at all, the government was to stupid and slow to do anything about the advance intel they had.

Ne-ways back to the point. Wiretapping it's not about the info. NSA gather, rather the issue of privacy. I may not be doing an...

How many here believe the info in this article is about them LISTENING to your calls?

From what I read, too many. Educate yourself about the topic before getting all riled up about it one way or another.

And to those of you who use the credit system but object to this; you are just being political. Industry has used your economic info for over a decade for commercial purposes. Your calling patterns have been tracked for commercial purposes for years (why the databases in the first place?) and NOW you are upset?

Give me a break with all this.

The databases were maintained by the service providers though and not the government. How else could they provide itemized detailed bill statements?

Yeah, I said that. They maintained them for marketing purposes. The government wants to use those same records for security purposes.

Someone who is only upset with the security purpose but not the marketing purpose is highly suspect in my mind.

A couple years ago, I sold 3 prepaid phones to 3 guys of Arab decent. I work near a major Army base in the southeast, and they had told me they were foreign military personnel on temporary duty at this base. Now, my brother is a training officer on that same base, and he hadn't said anything to me about personnel from this country being on post. So, I kept the information on these 3 guys, and asked my brother about it when I got home that night. He told me there absolutely were no personnel on the base from that country, and that I should send the information I had kept to the FBI. I did. No word ever came back to me, of course, but I have no doubt that I did the right thing.

The truth of the matter is this: terrorists, criminals, ...

Thanks for sharing, and I do agree on your points. Yours calling history and patterns have been saved and reviewed for purposes OTHER than national security for years.

If someone is NOW upset that national security has been added to that list those people might need to self evaluate their priorities.

I too would be upset if domestic calls were being monitored. I do not have an issue with international calls being monitored to suspected terrorist persons. The "scenarios" people cited such as pizza delivery and such just doesn't happen. I don't order Humus from U.A.E.
