I have been with Cingular since they started. I am looking at getting a new phone, my current phone which I love is about 6-7 years old and is not working very well anymore. I use to get a new phone every year or so but I have been really happy with this one. When I went into the Cingular store to see about upgrading my phone (after the employees told me my phone was old about a million times, duh!) they went on to tell me that I do not qualify for the 'new customer' price, since I am an existing customer. Is there anyway I can stay with cingular, keep my current phone number and still get a dicount on a phone?

just go to the corporate store, not an authorized dealer

What is the difference? Thanks for your help

corporate stores and premier indirects offer new pricing on upgrades.
when you visit the next store ask if they are corporate or indirect or 3rd party (wal-mart,etc.)
...
Try upgrading your phone online. That's where you can find the best discounts (with another 2 yr contract) 😉

you don't qualify for "the new customer" price. That is correct, you're an existing customer. You qualify for a phone upgrade discount, which is basically the same thing as long as you sign a one or two yr agreement. Also, you say your phone is more than 7 yr old. That has got to be a TDMA phone, so not only you will have to get a new phone; but also a new GSM calling plan.

No my phone has the gsm or whatever it is. The phone I had before that I wasn't able to call and it was because it didn't have the new card/chip whatever, anyway this one does I paid a little over 300 dollars back then to get the best they had. They phone has been all over and works great (well used to). Anyone have luck with buying "unlocked" phones? I do not want to sign a contract again and the stupid fees.

what kind of phone was it that just died on you? im curious.

unlocked phones are cool.......but cingular wont cover or insure them and you have to manually set up the mms messaging, web, and sometimes text.
if you dont wanna sign a contract they why did you go to the store to try to upgrade (just curious)?
and what is the make and model of the phone you currently have? are you an orange (cingular) or blue (at&t) customer? basically who's calling plan and sim card are you using?

I am a cingular customer I know my sim card will work.
I went to the store to actual look at the phones, cant do that on-line. I want to know how it felt in my hand if it will fit in pocket, that is where I keep my phone. I also wanted to see if I could get a good deal since I have been a customer forever. However, I did find that different stores offer different pricing. One store was selling the razor (not the v3i) for 70 with a contract. Which was the cheapest I found for that phone, but I don't want that phone.
Currently I am using a Samsung, don't know the model number, but it is a flip, very small. I still get compliments from people on the size. It is much smaller than the razor (lenght and width), but not as flat.
