Why is it that some customers relate GSM with satellites?

This is funny, and it's been months since I've heard a customer say this. I used to hear a lot more when I was in a call center, but today this customer came in saying that he wanted to upgrade to a RAZR phone, not only because it was GSM, but because "GSM is better because it uses satellites" [I laughed deep inside] and educated the customer... lol The only explanation I can find to this is that they hear that GSM is global.
Customer: Oh! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Global? Dang! this phone must use satellites!

also, in gsm's infancy states-side, there was a lot of talk about GPS in cell phones. using 2 of the same letters really threw people off. that was what i noticed when i sold phones at that time.

whats more disturbing is when a rep tells you they operate off of satellites.......

or when you go to a store and the rep asks WHATS THE DIFFRENCE BETWEEN GSM AND TDMA? they compatible right? Dude he should not be selling phones......

At the customer service call center I worked at, there was a time when the majority of reps seriously thought that GSM used satellites... and probably contributed greatly to mis-educating our customers. It was very hard to kill that little meme, as apparently one or more of our TRAINERS were actually under the same impression, and hence were teaching it to the new hires.

There's still at least one fellow in the center who thinks that, but he arrived at this conclusion by his own logic. He also think that the Baja peninsula is part of California, and has apparently been crediting back customers for roaming in Mexico based upon this particular conviction.

The lesson is that you can go out of your way to provide folks with the right infor...

Yep, in my experience, that's it. People only hear a three-letter technical acronym that starts with "G". I've heard lots of people mistakenly use "GPS" when they mean "GSM", etc. If they can't even tell the difference, no wonder they confuse how each works.

Alot of people think GSM stands for "Global Satellites for Mobiles" instead of the true term of "Global System for Mobiles"...

One word that people probably don't listen to until they want something for free ๐Ÿ™‚

One of my managers used to say GSM stood for global satellite...

It took dozens of comments by me before he would quit saying it.

No wonder he got out of retail, not quite smart enough for it.

Jon,

To be fair, when I first started with Go Wireless, I would say the same thing. You corrected me also.

Ah, what a dumb ass I was. ๐Ÿคฃ

On the contrary my friend.....you soon will have 3 and I have 2!!

That mall location is super nice. I poked my head in when I was in town this past weekend. I did shop one of the guys.......you may want to think of some new help there!! Was there another re-build out? The color scheme was awesome.

Needless to say, I am very pleased of your success.

I love you too Tex.

I'd love to move to Texas to work for you instead of selling Cingular here in Pennsylvania lol.
