AT&T Sim Card
Does anyone if I would have to unlock a cingular phone to use with my AT&T Sim card? I'm looking into buying a phone off of ebay so I'm double checking if it must be unlocked even if it is cingular-released. My plan is too good to migrate to the cingular side. Also, if a phone has 900/1800/1900 band would that mean it won't work very well with Cingular coverage? Does Cingular use mainly the 850 band? Thanks a lot

It's infinitely easier to buy an unlocked phone to use with your AT&T sim card, but if you're this determined to hang on to your AT&T Wireless plan, you probably have a nice one. . . so I should warn you that in the next year, most of the sweet deals for legacy AT&T IRU customers will be discontinued. For example - the Charter offer of unlimited minutes for 99.99 is set to be completely gone by the end of July.
If you get a phone that doesn't have 850, there might be some areas where you have less signal, and you'll have less signal in buildings (the higher frequencies penetrate less), but you should be just fine in any metro area.

thanks a lot for the info. so it wouldnt work with a cingular-locked phone, it has to be unlocked? i'm overseas now and there a lot of incredibly nice phones that run on 900/1800/1900 so im worried about the reception. i have a plan where i get 1000 anytime minutes, 7pm nights (unlimited), unlimited m2m, for 39.99... i really hope they dont screw me over on that one!

You should be able to keep that plan for at least a few more months, but beware that eventually, everything AT&T Wireless will be expunged, to replaced by. . .uh, AT&T wireless? 🤨 Of course, the new AT&T will have nothing to do with the old. There should be plenty of unlocked quadband phones about - Nokia has a bunch of new phones that are quadband. Other than getting the network settings for Mmode, you should be able to slap in your SIM & go.

you will need 850. it's not a matter of getting a better signal but in most areas, it's the only signal... in intergrated markets most are 850 now. do not get a phone that does not have 850. you will regret it.
