3G PDA's?

wbexpress

It's somewhat difficult to be a Cingular customer and to look at the Verizon website with 6 or 7 broadband PDA's, and then to look at Cingular's "non-options". Does anyone have a sense as to whether they are actually going to offer something similar to the Moto Q once 3G is rolled out nationwide?

there will be a few 3g PDA's for Cingular.. There will be one from HTC and there will be two from palm. www.engadgetmobile.com. Both will support true 3g u will be able to talk on the phone and be on the Internet at the same time. Verizon's current lineup of PDA's do not offer that.

Thanks for the info and thanks for the site. One other related issue: right now I have a Nokia 6820 with Data Connect, and use it "sparingly" as a wireless modem, as every time I do it uses around 3 megs just to log on. If and when I get one of the new 3G PDA's, what data plan will I need? Obviously using a phone's web browser uses a lot less data than a PC, but I'm not certain what "plan" I will need to make it work. Thanks again.

That plan is for browsing from the phone only. If your going to be using the phone as a modem, you'll need to sign up for the laptop connect @ 59.99.

The PDA connect will work, but don't be surprised if you get a huge bill for tethering with that plan.

No, I've actually had a couple people come in with huge bills and it turns out they were using the unlimited media net to tether to their laptop. I got half of the amount credited if they signed up for the laptop connect.

i think verizon's pda(if they run on evdo) cant talk and be on the internet at the same time because of evdo technology, which only supports data unless its a way to transmit on cdma and go on the internet on evdo at the same time if thats what you are talking about(simplymarcus)

That is what I am talking about. The current version of EVDO that Sprint and Verizon are using does not support voice and data usage at the same time. That will change soon with the revisions to EVDO. Currently the only 3g in the US that supports voice and data at the same time is Cingular. The 3g PDA's that Cingular are going to release are far ahead of the competition. There will be a verison of the Q for Cingular with UMTS.

Yep. If you want 3G now, Cingular is not the place, you should go to Sprint or Verizon. It would be nice if we'd catch up a little quicker.

Why is it taking Cingy so long to deploy a true 3G network, and I'm not talking about the 15 or so cities we have it right now? Does Cingy need to hire a sharper r&d department? I can picture our r&d engineer types sitting around in some office in Atlanta eatin' doughnuts and watching tv. 😡

Why? Cingular is catching up pretty quickly. By the end of the year we will have UMTS / HDPA in 100 markets (if not more)
My suggestion to wbexpress is: hold on tight, because Cingular is coming out with some ****ing hot ass phones in 3Q. The next 6 months are going to be very; very interesting.
I'm sorry for the Vzw fan boys; but soon they will feel the power of the merger. lol
3G is coming! and with it other surprises will come too!
We are committed to show the US who is the best carrier in the US, and we will deliver. The most innovative carrier category belongs to Cingular, and no one else!

maybe HSPDA/UMTS will blow out EVDO and they want to wait, i seriously think cingular is going a little slow because they want to wait when 3g becomes really popular to the point that everyone wants that service, i mean i would love to use 3g from cingular, BUT THEY DID NOT ROLL OUT UMTS IN THE METRO DETROIT AREA YET AND I WANT IT BAD!!!!!!!!!!!! *im calm*

i just cant wait until the nation's best gsm or even the best mobile company rolls out HSPDA/UMTS nationwide, then the competition will really heat up, i just dont want to have to go to sprint or verizon to use 3g, if it comes to that, which i doubt i would probably use sprint's power vision

i just want to know when cingular will release UMTS/HSPDA in the metro detroit area, i think ...
