How long should you charge your battery?

ok, i've found just about everything on cell phone lithium ion batteries, except how long they should be charged for. I ussually charge my phone over night and one of the girls i work with is telling customers that this is a bad way to charge your battery. She is telling customers that they shouldn't leave their cell phones on a house charger over 4 hours. I've found that a lithium ion battery should not be fully discharged regularly and that lithium ion batteries are typically good for 300-500 charge/discharge cycles. Can anyone tell me what they have heard or have documantation/websites to back this up?

Thank You in Advance

Anyone? This question is killing me. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find any info on this. The sad thing is i'm sure i've been staring at the answer and just haven't realized it yet.

Here is my answer. And this is what I believe to be true. Don't take my word as gospel.

The phone knows what a battery is fully charged (hence the "charging complete" phrasing when it is so). When fully charged the phone sends a signal to the charge to stop charging the battery, and the charger will slow it down to a trickle of sorts.

So, based on my belief, as long as you're not using some crap brand aftermarket charger, charging it all night should be no problem.

Did you read your owners manual that gives specific charging instructions?

the owners manual says to allow 3 full charge/discharge cycles to condition the battery, but does not say anything about how long to leave the phone on charge for a full charge, or what the maximum time is to leave a phone on charge.

i would say not to leave it charging for more than 24 hours, when its half way discharged, i charge it overnight and when i wake up i just stop charging it, its nothing wrong w/ the charger still connected to the phone even when it says "fully charged" but 24 hours is the limit, i never fully discharge my phone, only once a month,

Thank You, the site you provided does help to explain a lot and it appears that most batteries should be fully charged within a 3-4hour charge period. Obviously you shouldn't leave a battery charging for extreme periods like 24hrs+, but is it still damaging/bad to leave a phone charging overnight while you sleep? I'm guessing 6-9 hours for most people.

Thank You again, Thank You to everyone else that has responded too!!!
