I have a question about UMTS technology.

With everyone going towards 3G, and the installation of UMTS, will GSM eventually be discontinued in the same way that TDMA is being scrapped?

I really hope that GSM does not go away because I am not about to give up my Nokia 6010 anytime soon.

Possible I suppose but I wouldn't count on it happening for a really long time. TDMA wont be gone tell '08. I would count on your 6010 dieing long before that would ever be possible. But I doubt it will vanish anytime soon.

UMTS is the 3G data overlay for GSM.

There's a better way to think of it that will help things from getting muddled. GSM is basically our voice network. We also have a data network. When the voice network went down tuesday, the data side was still working flawlessly. Our phones use either GPRS, EDGE, or UMTS for the data network. GPRS was used on our first GSM phones. Then we added EDGE which was faster. Now we have phones that use UMTS, and even one that uses HSDPA (which sends packets of data on the UMTS network). UMTS and onward is what phones are moving to, but it wont replace GSM. It will replace GPRS and EDGE, and only affects data usage.

I did notice that GSM was replaced by UMTS on this customer's account as soon as his new 3G phone was activated. (in telegence) The same way it changes when you upgrade a TDMA customer to GSM. So, I think it may replace it in the long run....

probably not. there is only one market korea and japan that is 3g only. Europe which uses gsm and 3g is basically the future model for us. The 3g phone uses both gsm and umts thats why they are listed as UMTS / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900 they have both gsm and umts.

Lol all concerned over the longevity of the 6010.

I'll be amused for the next three weeks over that.

The main reason GSM was replaced by UMTS on their account is because the UMTS equipment won't work at UMTS/HSDPA speeds with an old sim card. The system won't even let you change equipment if you don't switch them to a 3G Sim card also.

It totally sucked when I called in to change the IMEI on my ERP line to a 3G phone and I had to call back when I got my hands on a 3G SIM.....
