How to upgrade an AT&T account
Here is the deal
I had a family plan contract for over 2 years. I have started with AT&T. I think that currently there is no plan on the market to match what I have.
What I am asking here is how to preserve the plan/payments I currently have and upgrade my phones.
I have spoken to cingular customer service but they could not offer anything besides buying some old nokia brick phones.

If you have an old technology plan, you can upgrade if you want to and keep your plan. Just count on some major biling issues from then on out. Mixing new technology phones, and old technology plans isn't a good idea.

what's the old technilogy what's the new technology? Isn't it all the same digital GSM network?
Reps told me that to upgrade I must select a new plan. Is this true?
...
The old technology is called TDMA the new technology is GSM. GSM phones and TDMA plans don't mix and create biling issues. You would need to select a new GSM plan to be compatible with the GSM phone.

All of my phones are GSM. Except they have AT&T sim cards. So since the network type is not a problem; how do I get the reps at cingular to let me keep the old plan and get new phones? What is the magic word?

Cingular does'nt have that capability to let you keep your old plans. When Cingy and AT&t merged Cingy ket former AT&T custmer's keep their plans until they decided to upgrade, that was Cingy's little gift to AT&T customers. So in return when you upgrade Cingualr says "Ok, when we merged, we didn't require you to cahnge phones and plans, but now since you eligible to upgrade you have to upgrade to the whole Cingular network".

So I am definatly screwed and there is no way I can upgrade my phones and keep the same plan.
The only choice I have left is to buy phone from independent retailer?

This is true. You could go to a cingular store and buy a phone at no commitment pricing and find someone to unlock it for you. This way you could keep you plan. I would really look hard into the new plans though. Look at your history of usage, see if they can offer you any bonus minutes to migrate(which they do in my market) A lot of people are hesitant to migrate because they have great plans. But they are also unaware of their minute usage patterns. If you don't go to a cingular store and buy one at the no commitment price you could also try ebay or websites like www.myworldphone.com just make sure they have 850/1900 mhz.

Well I did look at the amount of minutes I am using.
Here is the basics of my plan
I have 3 lines
1000 minutes
free nights and weekends
free mobile to mobile
all of this for $81 dollars tax included
between 3 of the phones about 800 minutes is used. well over 2000 night and weekends minutes
there is a 1400 minute plan from cingular for $89 plus fees
there is a 1000 minute plan form tmobile for $50 but extra for additional line and no free nights and weekends
so in terms of monthly payments I don't see how I can find a compatible plan
Any sugestions are welcome.
