Some Help, Please.......

ThunderandLightning

I wasn't sure what forum to use, but I know a lot of people switch forums several times day/night.
I need some help and advice.
I live in Gainesville, fl.,area code 352 and zipcode 32614.
If the University of Florida were ground zero(center point)who is the best carrier, coverage wise for a 20 mile radius? Though we have all six or seven carriers, some have "giant holes".
I know I'm asking a lot, but most of the people on here are also cell reps. who have certain maps which the general public is not allowed to see. Verizon dies east of Waldo rd. and heading towards Williston.
I'm not interested in either Nextel or Alltel.
Thank you in advance.
While I'm here, has Moto V600 gotten any better?

Well check it out, I work for verizon so you may take what I say with the grain of salt but I went into the VZW maptool and did some compairsons of the carriers in your area. I was looking at a 50 mile area around gainesville with your city at the center. Our service itself seems to be covering a 13 mile radius around Gainesville, and fallows north/south along I-75, about a mile wide with the freeway in the middle, it seems to be much better along the 301. Now it does seem we got the rest of the area that isn't directly under us as extended area which means that if you had a verizon phone, you shouldn't have roaming fees but advanced network services such as txt msging, caller ID, in-network calling, and so on wont work.

AT&T seems to ha...

Thank you for your time and effort.
(I now have a LG VX-6000, but does not have analog, 2 miles east of Waldo rd. on NE 39th Ave, no signal)
Thinking of paying the ETF, to go with GSM.
By the way though you work for Verizon and the areas you do cover the phone is great!
As I head south of Williston either no signal or barely extended network, calls drop out there to often, but then again, so do Alltel, Verizon, and Attws(TDMA)
Thank you again for helping so quickly! 😁

A fellow Gainesville resident? Yeah...you're going to have some trouble without analog support up there. I found out the hard way with my trusty (but analog free) Sanyo 4700 (Sprint!).

I loved that phone! I actualy had the Sanyo 4500 and stuck with that with sprint as long as I could. The damned thing would pick up service on sprint's network with 1 or 2 bars where other sprint phones wouldn't even get a bar. Good choice on equipment there Much!

No problem, I was just checking out our extended area contracts in your area it seems like they are all going through Alltel or SprintPCS, so they maybe the best two companies to check out.

I normaly don't like recomending SprintPCS due to they have a rep for offering poor customer service, but if your primary consern is Coverage. they or AT&T looks like the way to go going by claimed coverage.

As for Williston, they look like a big ol' no man's land for us for about 20 miles south of it. It says its all extended with our all our contracts in Alltel. So if your having problems with extended coverage there, that maybe why.

I'm heading home now. Night!

oh... one more thing (starting to feel like columbo here) You may want to check if your on a current price plan and your PRL is up todate on it (Prefered Roaming List). Alot of times we'll be offering Identical price plans with the same exact minutes with the same exact promo but with different PRL's on it. The older one may not have areas on the list the the newer one does. I think they usualy try to keep them upto date across the board, but there are certain points they stop updated the PRL on a price plan. I've seen times where I had a customer in an area that he never gotten service with, change to a new plan, did the *228 (Phone programing and PRL updateing) and suddenly get service. I'd say its a 50/50 chance of a fix but it may work f...

I am thinking about going with Cingular as my cell carrier.
I've heard good and bad things about Moto V600. Is this phone worth getting though some carriers are phasing it out?
Has anyone heard of any phones that may be released in August or Sept?
I was just on c/net checking carriers for advice on cell service(mostly along the whole eastern seaboard) Sprint wasn't even listed, and T-Mobile really got trashed.
Though at the moment I'm a Vrz. customer I'm doing my research on Cingular. I have found though they may have some of the better phones in the bussiness, their coverage along the eastern seaboard(GSM) is still hurting even with their merge w/Attws doesn't seem to help their cause much.
I keep hearing about them...

i am an AT&T wireless customer care rep, and the V600 has had some reports on it for the screen going blank....it's not that common. As far as Verizon they don't have the GSM technology and AT&T wireless has a bigger coverage then Cingular and that is why they wanted to buy AT&T wireless. WE have had the coverage for almost 2 yrs.... if you are considering going to GSM consider a mulit band phone because it will pick up on both TDMA ( digital ) and GSM towers.... or check out the ratings on this webpage. I know that Samsung is coming out with a new phone but i can't remember the model # of the phone... also nokia and ericsson are coming out with some phones as well.... we haven't been advised of a release date though hopefully this will ...

Will Cingular ever come out with a new, quality GSM/TDMA camera phone? We all know TDMA is probably better coverage then GSM at this time. As for EDGE I don't about that.
As I said before they should come out with a GSM/TDMA/ANALOG camera phone, then I would have the best of the whole world.
I have thought of getting a satelite phone for emergencies and a "trac-phone" for normal day stuff.
I gave up my landline 8 years ago.
Does anyone know if satelite phones work indoors? I know they were designed mostly for remote outside use. But if you are ever stuck in no man's land, and you have no signal, and nobody around for miles, your expensive cell phone is useless.
Satelite phones are the future, the near future.
They'll have t...

no. TDMA is being ramped down and will most likely be phased out (turned off) within the next few years. Analog is going away within the next 6 months or so if all goes as planned. With the buyout of ATTW, our GSM network will be as large if not larger than Verizon's network, (and we don't charge roaming 😉 ).

GAIT phones were a temporary solution during the changeover from TDMA to GSM. i think there is only one manufacturer that is still even MAKING GAIT phones, and that is SE, and that phone is BAAAAAD

Take a good look at the T637 rather than the V600. Better all around and lots of transfer flexibility between IR and BT. I went form V600 to the Sony and never looked back.

Have not used Cingular on the East Coast yet but hee in the Southwest I have no complaints. I will be driving to Branson MO soon and will document the signal on I40 all the way, through Amarillo adn Oklahoma City. I had a TDMA phone on ATT and made this trip a few times. It will be ntersting to see the difference.

i am not a Cingular rep....but GSM phones are not satelite phones...they just operate off higher frequencies then TDMA phones do. I dont think that they will come out with a phone that supports all frequencies especially a camera phone.... i dont know if satelite phones will be coming out at any point in time...we haven't been told that info at AT&T wireless.... most of the phones between Cingular are the same as ours. we have some phone models between us that are different...but most are the same. But honestly i don't think they will come out with a camera phone that has both TDMA/GSM.. Most GSM phones now are strictly GSM ...the only 2 that have any sort of TDMA is a Siemens S46, and a Sony Ericsson T62U.. ( that is with AT&T wireless) i...

the moto v600's about to be discontinued...it's in phase out mode, which basically means something else is gonna replace it VERY soon. Like within the next month if I'm guessin right.

As far as the coverage goes....got me, all I've got to go on is the regular maps. Maybe some of the Cingular reps can help ya out with their map tool. If nothing else you can hop into one of their stores and get them to use it for ya.

Additonal note on AT&T coverage to fallowup my last post: The entire state of FL seems to be AT&T paradise. They must have got alot of real good buys there with towers. but when I zoomed out to see the area around it, their coverage seems to get really tight in the serounding states, staying to only the major interstates and big cities where we (verizon) actualy seem to get better coverage. Verizon also seems to do very well on the southern half of FL. Just its tight with the northern half.
