Would appreciate info on rate plan

I'm thinking of purchasing a Sony Ericsson T637 on Cingular through Amazon. Apparently I'll net $50 after rebates, etc.

Need some advice on choosing a plan - I will be adding a second line in about a month but I noticed on the Cingular site some plans charge $9.99 for a second line while others $19.99. There is no info on this on the Amazon site. Right now, considering Nation 600 Rollover Min, with unlimited n&w and mobile to mobile calling. Is it a wise move to purchase phone and plan through Amazon - what complications may I run into later on regarding customer service, etc. Secondly, if I am unhappy with the service and want to return it within 14 days, will I deal with Amazon or can I take it to a Cingular store?
Any advice and addi...

the $9.99 add-a-line is applicable for any rate plans $59.99 or higher. the 39 and 49 dollar plans are the 19.99 add-a-line.

if you purchase your phone through Amazon and want to return it, you need to return it through Amazon. It would be like buying it from "Average Joe's Wireless" or whatever. They are an agent for Cingular. The same normally applies if you have a problem with the phone under warranty - you need to deal with who you bought the phone from first.

as far as unlocking the phone goes, that would be a grey area. There would really be no way for us to know the phone was unlocked, unless we happened to have another company's SIM card to test the phone out.

Thanks for that... but I have a few more questions

If you can add an additional line to any plan -what, then is the difference between Nation Plans and Nation FamilyTalk Plans? When I want to add my second line, would I phone Cingular CS? It doesn't seem that Amazon offers that option. Also - do you know how long the $9.99 additional line promotion will last?

Thanks again.

there is no difference in the plans, just one is a family talk, one is a single line.

you could add the line on at a cingular store OR on the phone with CS.

the 9.99 is going on indefinitely, at least until the end of august, but most likely longer.

bobcat,

Cingular-branded T637 handsets are shipped/sold already unlocked. AFAIK, all tri- and quad-band phones currently sold by Cingular are SIM unlocked. Dual-band (US only) phones are SIM locked.

That saves you (&me) the trouble of having to call CS to unlock the phone for an international travel, as you would have to do with T-mobile, or going to grey market, as you would with AT&T. Cingular is smarter in that regard and I, as a customer, appreciate that and I voted for that by giving my business to Cingular and not to another carrier partly because of that 🙂

Hey, I didn't know that and that sounds great. I was thinking of buying a factory unlocked phone for fear of violating the warranty.

Just curious about where you are and how you rate cingular service. I am trying to get specific information on the reliability of service as I know GSM varies so much.

I'm switching over from Verizon - their customer service is appalling; and their phones are about the same standard if not worse. But I have to say, when things are good with them, they're good - reception is generally reliable. Still, I can't deal with their trying to squeeze every penny from every angle and horrendous customer service.

You said it all. The Verizon penny squeeze is on BT (big time) no pun intended. I have the T637 and I have to say I think that phone is a long homerun. I had the V600 for a few days but returned it. After having a clamshell for the past few years, I prefer a bar phone now. No moving parts and it is just as small. The MOT was bulky and I hate the phonebook. No multi numbers per entry. The SE battery life is a lot better as well.

On the road You can slap on a Jabra 250 throw the phone in the glove box and make and recive calls or change profiles all with your voice to or from anyone on your phone list. When a call comes in, the name of the caller is heard and you just say answer or "busy" to send it to VM. Anyone with a Palm or IR device ca...

Bobcat,

I've only been with Cingular for about a week and a half now. Switched over from Verizon. I'm in Northern California (San Francisco bay area). The service looks fine to me. I can't tell the difference from Verizon after switching. Actually, yes I do. I get a strong Cingular signal at my house in Fremont (Niles neighborhood) where all my Verizon phones used to either say "no service" or switched to analog roaming. Either way, I was never able to receive calls in my house with Verizon. I wanted Bluetooth, plus I thought I'd try Cingular's "fast forward" cradle that forwards all calls to a landline while the cell phone is in the cradle. It turned out that I don't even need the device as Cingular provides strong signal at my house as ...

I was looking to use the 'fast forward' cradle to save on anytime minutes when I am at work or at home but I think it is only availabe with a select few phones, not including the T637. [snip]

Huh? Are you sure about that? I believe Cingular either already sells "fast forward" cradle for T637 or are getting it soon. They did for certain sell the cradle for T616, and T637 is simply an upgrade to the T616, and all interfaces appear to be the same, so I think even a T616 cradle might simply work.

You may want to give Cingular telesales a call. When I was getting my T637 (at a corp. store), I was told that I could get a "fast forward" cradle for T637, although in the end I was able to...
