R.I.P v551 :(

😢 My v551 died this evening. Im going to put my SIM card in an old T-Mobile (unlocked) phone that my brother is sending me in the mail. My question is this, will I be able to text from this TMobile phone? will I have to set it up in order to do so? If so; how? I am planning on doing this until Cingular releases a phone that catches my eye w810, N70 or something like that.
I am holding a funeral service tomorrow morning in the parking lot of the nearest Cingular store 😢 Anyone is invited j/k ☹️

Does the keypad still light up? Too bad you don't have a technican near by.

keypad still lights up. Screen won't. It all started with a crack at the hinge. Then it was loose at the hinge, eventually all the looseness affected the connection that sends power to the screen (my guess)
This is my second motorola that dies like this. T720 (POS) and now this one. I thought this one wouldn't break like this, because the hinge "looked" stronger than that on the T720.
I really doubt I will ever buy Motorola again.

I see that happen to them all the time. That small crack that you see on the outside is a small part of the problem. I'm betting that crack made the hinge wobble, which bent the plastic flange which the top half is supposed to rest on, which rubbed against the power cable and eventually tore it.

The good news is that part just unsnaps, so if you had another from anywhere it's easily replaceable. You'd still need a new shell for it though.

lol, I understand that. I'm tired of repairing them, but I do give them credit for being repairable. LG used to solder their parts together. I haven't cracked one open in awhile to check if they still do.

That is where I was headed - it is repairable for just over $50 - much less than the cost of a phone. I dropped my V551 and it broke at the hinge, but I fixed it before it tore the flex cable.

People pay $50 to fix those things? I need to start charging.

Yup, that is my price ($61 W/ tax) to replace the housing and ribbon on a V400/V55x phone. If you don't have insurance and are not eligible to get a disount on a new phone it is a good price - I even have people fix their phones who have ins. but don't want to lose ringtones or wait over the weekend to get a replacement.
