There is a switch in the external connector that turns the internal antenna off when an antenna is plugged in - there is no field repair for this.

NOT True.

Call MOTO direct if you like and verify. That little port has nothing to do with the antenna.

The connector is damaged - usually you see this on the V551, send it back to Moto.

The V551 does have an antenna port. If you look at the two they are significantly different in structure.

Yeah, that little port on the back is a software access point, not a coaxial antenna port. Wilson, for some crazy reason, makes that adaptor yet it does NOTHING to connect to the internal radio.

that is fine, don't believe me - I Don't Care. I have replaced them on many other phones - just not the Razr - too delicate. BTW I sell the same antenna adapter for the Razr - I had to find it for a customer to use a phone in a safe room i.e. a metal box that signal does not penetrate. I also doubt that moto uses that for a software interface since there are better places inside the phone to access directly.

Ever been to the Motorola Assembly and Repair centers in Ft. Worth? Call MOTO, ask them. That port has nothing to do with an antenna and they have no concept as to why Wilson decided to make the adaptor. I have the same adaptor on my Wilson order form and have asked them (Wilson) what it does or how it connects. They don't know, they just THOUGHT the port was an antenna port.

No, I have not, have you. Notice where the port is in relation to the antenna contact - what an odd place to put a "software port" - I would think it would be hidden (behind the battery door perhaps) I'm sure you would agree the 6010 has better reception than the V3 - the contractor for this "safe room" had no svc w/ his 6010 and the RAZR I sold him, until I found the adapter. It seems we will agree to disagree and I am done with this.

????

Has Motorola told you this is an antenna adaptor or do you just want to dig in your heels and continue to speculate?

In your free time why don't you call MOTO and ask THEM, no need to agree or disagree with me.

You are effectively bringing signal from a better antenna in contact with the handset and it could improve reception BUT the same thing could be accomplished by getting the mini antenna stickon Wilson sells with their portable booster kits. The port does not access the antenna. I thought it did at one time as well but I looked into the issue and contacted the manufacturer.

Funny, the engineers who designed the phone and their head product rep for the Central Region states it is a software access port.

Where exactly was this rep?

Just curious if it was one of the many "outsourced" reps who are simply reading from a book or someone local who knows the product.

I've used external antennas on the v551 and nokia 6340i (Yeah, that's the gait enabled one) and just last week I replace the v551 with v3xx. Just got back today after using v3xx on att network for a 1500 mile road trip. 50% of the time I was off interstate highway and in fringe areas. Both with and without external antenna. I can assure you, when the phone is in a fringe area, plugging into the external antenna will (in most cases) get you a usable signal.

Now, the bad news. Here, they say it better than I can.

Read the red warning at the bottom third of the page.
