anyone seen the commercials where Sprint is comparing their broadband speeds to Cingular's EDGE??? Are they a) that stupid to forget about Cingular having UMTS or b) scared to compare the two???

It's all about advertising. The saddest part is people will see the commercial and react based upon it's information rather than researching it for themselves.

Technically, Sprint's Broadband (EVDO) network is 400-700 kbps with peaks up to 2 mbps, which is faster than the EDGE network, though, not as widespread. Also, the UMTS (may or may not be faster than EVDO) is in select few markets, less markets covered than Sprint's broadband network. Not to defend or offend anybody, I believe this to be their logic in marketing.

The marketing is 100% truthful, but it's a careful spin. They do clearly say it's faster than "Cingular's Edge" and not just "Cingular."

Also, UMTS is speeds up to 3.6Mbit/s but that is dependent on network technology. Right now it's about 1.8. Imagine if they hit the theoretical 8-10Mbit/s? I'd like to see that commercial.

of course EVDO is gonna be faster than EDGE, they are comparing a 3g standard to a 2.5 standard! and HSDPA is roughly the same speed as EV-DO or faster

Ok, while we're on the subject of 3g/UMTS...I have a question if anyone can answer. Does the FCC govern what frequency a carrier can operate in terms of third generation networks? Say for instance, in Japan/Korea or the UK/Germany/France carriers operate their 3g networks in the 2100 mhz band and I believe Cingular to be the only carrier here in the America's to offer UMTS, why are the operating in the 1900 band? So therefore a handset capable of operating in the UMTS 2100 not be able to (third generation speeds) operate in the 1900 band?

1. All UMTS markets are equipped with HSDPA.
2. HSDPA has higher downlink speeds and lower latency than EVDO Rev. O.

This commercial is just a pathetic attempt by Sprint to actually attain a respectable amount of customers this quarter.

My LG cu500 is WAY faster than my buddies VZW razr. The Cingy 3g is going to be released to atleast 20 new networks in the next few weeks and Cingy will hopefully deploy a marketing campaign that will makes Sprint look as pathetic as they're service.

If you want speed get an LG cu500. Hands down best phone around. I'm sure people are getting sick of me pumping this phone up, but **** we've never gotten anything this cool before! 😉 😉

This is their desperate, last minute tactic to lure customers in... It's a shame it is not going to work for long...
In just a few weeks more HSDPA markets will be deployed, and by year's end we will be pretty much paralleled with the red check mark's and right on Sprint's heels on 3G markets.
