Tri-band & Quad-band Phones-Unlocked?

Everything I have seen on this forum seems to state that the Quad-band phones (Moto V400 & 600 - now I guess it's just V400) are unlocked when purchased from a Cingular store. I thought I read here that the tri-band phones like the SE T616 & 637 and LG L1200 were provided unlocked as well.

My fiancee and I were about to sign up for a family plan through her work and we both go to Germany several times a year. We both have local pre-paid SIMs with local numbers there. We must have unlocked phones. The Cingular guy in the retail store says that they are not SIM locked but the woman who works in corporate sales says they are all locked. We're buying two phones, probably a V400 and a SE.

What's the scoop? Are they for sure unlocked as pur...

They ARE unlocked at purchase time. All "world phones" sold by Cingular are unlocked when you buy them. You should be able to go to Germany without any problem what so ever, unless of course the international roaming rate is a problem (but hey, it beats calling cards). It certainly beats pre-paid on ANY network ANY day.

With a German SIM you don't pay international roaming - all calls in Germany are local calls (we're not calling the US except to check voice mail and we can use a cheap calling service (local number again) to do that). So although the prepaid rates ARE higher than what we would pay if we had a monthly plan in Germany, they are MUCH cheaper than roaming rates using the Ci...

sounds like you're right on the misinformed corporate person. He/She may be fairly new. Now knowing a little more detail it does sound like the prepaid is better than the roaming charges. Do you plan on using the prepaid SIM in your new world phone while you're there in Germany?

Sounds like you've got everything planned out. Hope the service works out well for ya.

Why would you worry about international roaming charges if you have an unlocked phone? The whole point of having an unlocked phone was to use a local company's sim with a local number and avoid Cingular's (or another 'foreign' carrier's) international roaming charges. Pre-paid is still significantly cheaper than international roaming charges.
Just what are you saying?

I misread the post, my mistake. I was under the impression that he had a prepaid phone for full time use and was interested in getting rid of it.
