Neil Boortz

I dont know if anyone on here is familiar with Neil Boortz. He is a radio talk show host out of Atlanta. I was listening to his talk show the other day and had mentioned that he had gone into a major wireless carrier (he didnt name the carrier) and wanted to activate a wireless internet card. Te rep, of course, needed his ssn to do a credit check. Boortz explained to the cust that a credit check wasnt necessary as he was going to pay for the service a year in advance...and since the service was for unlimited usage his bill should be the same every month. The rep told Boortz that a credit check is required to activate an account. Boortz went on a pretty long rant about this explaining to his listeners that he was asking the carrier for ...

Well he didn't need to give him the social, but he also didn't need to get service. Data cards aren't offered on prepaid service. They might be in the future, but in the mean time he'll either have to give his social, or pay a security deposit when his information doesn't clear any of the credit bureaus because he wouldn't give his social.

thats the argument i made when my friend and I talked about it.

I know cinguler, for one, does not offer prepaid data services. So activating one would be impossible.

On top of that. If you are activating an internet service with cingular. Then cingular becomes your ISP. We would have to have some record of the user just in case the user is doing illegal things with his internet service. If nothing else the ssn verifies the customer is who they say they are.

yep....... he's stupid...
if the rep would have been smart he would have told him even on an unlimited plan he could go to canada and rack up a high bill or put the sim a phone and use it for int'l calls... ect ect. to bad people that think they have power abuse it.

i get those people alot ranting that the government is overtaxing or that the ssn only hurts people.

I just suggest Pick Your Plan since it counts as a new activation for me (at least at my place) no ssn needed

And there is no way to accurately pay for the taxes ahead of time, they vary by quarter based on government charges, while I understand that people dont want to give their SSN out (neither do I), you have to to run a credit check. Old people, Who are usually the worst about it, really twerk me becasue sometimes they refuse to give it, I have much better things to do with my time then steal somebodys idenity

Well, his argument is flawed because of two key points:

1) The service amount is not fixed and therefore no amount of paying in advance can eliminate a need to determine credit worthiness

2) The taxes are not fixed so there is no exact guarantee of an exact bill amount to prepay in the first place.

I would have had a field day with this guy and often do with customers who come in with a flawed objective.

What he also could have discovered is that many carriers can run your credit without providing a SSN. He would be required to verifiy significant amounts of information, something which he may not carry with him or know at all times. Depends on the carrier but I know Cingular does not require a SSN.

It is not a telegence vs. care issue. Any market that allows for analyist review can oerform a credit evaluation manually and without a SSN.

That's not necessarily true. Credit checks can be matched based on Name and Address. If the guy really had credit and he gave his correct address, the credit check would have passed. If there was a problem, he could have gone on the phone with a Cingular Analyst.

I work in an area where we get a lot of foreign exchange students. Cingular does not require a ssn for these customers, they just require a $500 deposit. This is the only case that I have seen that no ssn is required on a postpaid account. So in the end, Cingular does not require a ssn. ๐Ÿ˜‰
