I was told by a sony rep that the unlocked 810i would allow you to upgrade to 4gigs rather than just 1gig. If you were to unlock a cingular branded device would it remove the 1gig restrictions?
...
When a phone is branded for cingular, unfortunately it loses some of its premeir features, which in turn is why cingular offers them for alot less then an unlocked phone. Once a phone has a designated internal memory, thats what it has, unless you were to take the phone apart anf physically install a larger hard drive. Unlcoked phones phones always have more of everything, and once they get picked up by a carrier, then water them down...

Sure i understand that, however in the case of the W810 there is a software limitation on what you can upgrade the memory to via a duo card. The sony rep had mentioned if you get it unlocked it can use a 4g card in the upgradable momory slot rather than just the 1g. In this case its all software not harware. I wasn't sure as to whether you needed to purchase an unlocked device or if you could unlock a branded device and remove this inhibition.

Oh i thought you were referring to preinstalled memory. In terms of the memory stick i do not know whether that can be done or not, you would have to consult with someone who unlocks those phones. But i do know that when you buy a phone through cingular, limitation are preset on them, but i do not know if these would disappear if you simply got the phone unlocked. 😛
...
I have a friend who has it, and he said you cant just unlock it, you have to flash different software to the device... 😕
...
Can't have your cake and eat i too, huh. Go fig.
...
All is probably not lost.. If you flash the firmware - hence removing Cingular's restrictions, you should be able to still use the voice and data or whatever features you use on your Cingular branded phone..

wotanserver.com only costs 9.95. makes you're menus go with the theme. I have not found much else that it does. did not hurt the phone and you can unbrand it there and then go to sonyericsson.com and reinstall the sony firmware.

good question. Mine is unlocked. Send me a 4gb card and I'll let you know how it works! I actaully heard from our data trainer that there is a software flash you could do that would allow up to 7gb card.
...
🤣 I'm not that curious.
...
lol!
do they even have a 7GB card? that seems like an awful lot of memory to be able to stick on a little card...

Its a crazy world out there. Did you know a man walked on the moon not to long ago?

I have read that it works with a 4gb card.
...
I've never heard that a Cingular branded phone could only use a 1GB. Unless proven to me in person, I would have to say that is just a rumor.
...
What about the SLVR with its 100 song cap? It was at the W810i training sponsered and presented by sony reps that i was informed of this.
...
But that isn't based on physical or removable memory. Again, I would not believe it until I saw it. I have the unlocked w810 and 4GB but I honestly cant say for sure about the locked w810.
...
If you get a chance would you check it out? I have the locked phones but no access to a 4GB card without going out and purchasing one. I would be extremely interested to know how it works out!

I persanlly have had the Cingular branded version of the W810i since Oct 3, and I got my fiance one too. I bought us both 4 GB cards and we have been using them with absolutely no issues at all for a few weeks now. I've filled mine up with about 2.7 GB of songs so far; and she has used about 2 GB.
I hate that the Cingular version restricts the size of the MP3's that you can use as ringtones, but other than that, we have come across no memory restrictions at all.
