I am having several customers who have new laptops and I cant find a Express Card that will fit. Does anyone know a solution for this? Does Cingular sell a card to fit the new slot? Thanks 🙂

Data Connect plan on a CU500 with tethering or a USB adaptor. www.psism.com sells one, but it's over $150 just for the adaptor.

On the CU500 you can actually talk on the phone while your laptop uses the data network.

There are no GSM express cards even slated for release yet, so that wont be an option for over half a year. I'm not saying there will be anything after half a year, but I'm saying there will definitely be nothing in the next half a year.

Thank you but we are not set up with 3G yet. I was told only Verizon has them and that stinks.

Be sure to avoid psism.com. I bought 2 adapters for customers and they do not work on a wide variety of cards.

It does work with the Novatel U730 (discontinued). I have 2 of these in my stores for store use, not with the express slot.

It does NOT work with the SE GC-83, Sierra AC-860, Optionmax GT, or the soon to be lauched Sierra AC-875.

I haven't tried to tether a CU500. Do you activate it on the stand alone data connect unlimited?

Dang! I don't know why Cingy put them on the job aid then. For tethering with a CU500 you can add the feature to the account or set it up on data only, depending on the customers needs. If they already have the phone, then just adding the data feature is the way to go.

Yea, unfortunately, they will have to wait because Express Cards at the major mobile card manufacturers are coming out with them and should be in the marketplace by next year. (I cannot give a timeframe because things can change.) (This has to deal with HSDPA and EV-DO)

VZW does have one, however, it is horrible.

Sprint is coming out with them next year also.

why do you say the v640 sucks I have nothing but good things about it, what you may be thinking of is customers are having issues buying third party pcmi express card adapters that are not compatible with their notebook but the v640 has had some great feedback?

The people who I am in contact with do not like the Express Cards or the Pc-cards because of the lack of data speeds.

(that is what they say do not shoot the messenger.)

(FYI; I didn't test the Express Cards, but the pc-cards were not good, but please note, VZW is not good in my area)

Use the CU500 and connect via Bluetooth. It works very fast; i've heard it's even sometimes faster than the pc cards. As long as the laptop has bluetooth you're good to go. I do recommend keeping the CU500 on a charger while it's connected because this will quickly drain the battery.

cingular doesn't have an express card yet, so these are the options:

1. buy a phone and tether.
2. buy a usb adapter and get a regular pc card.

I would suggest a pc-card over a phone and tethering. (i have done that before, and i get better performance with the data card than with the phone.)

our UMTS phones do a bang up job when tethering though.

I know, but you get better data speeds, and DB with pc-cards than with tethering a phone device.

I think they shouldnt allow tethering.

Tethering does bottle neck the connection, but if it's bluetooth that's 5.4 mbps, which is faster than our UMTS speeds. You wouldn't notice that much of a difference between the CU500 and one of our 3G data cards. It's also nice that you can still make voice calls on the phone while the laptop runs.

Very true.

I always tell people just to get a pc-card and just do it the normal way. Tethering is another way, but I just do not think it is a good idea to do mainly because it uses a lot of the battery of that device.

It does. We always recommend the PC card first. If they have an express card slot then we offer the option of tethering and the usb adaptor. I would never suggest tethering to someone not on UMTS. Just bleh.

Noooo i'm talking about an adapter that hooks into the usb port, and enables you to plug a regular pc card in.. We actually used a few (we ordered them online and activated the pc card for the cust). The only fallback, we have to get them through a third party company, so cing won't support it.

i have had the same issue too. one solution i have found is call the laptop's manufact. and see if the have an adapter. most dont but i think hp does.

other than that as i was told by data techs wait for cingular to release the express cards. or do the tethering method.

The most recent job aid I got pointed people towards http://www.psism.com to get a usb pcmcia card slot, and to use the GT Option Max with it. It's not a Cingular supported product, but apparently it works well enough for them to tell us to send people there.
