I have got a different answer everytime I talk with some one from Cingular (store, customer service, internet)so I need some real practical help. I recently purchased a motorola v400 from a1wireless.com and it arrived already activated with Cingular. I know (or was told) that I can use it in Europe and be on international roaming. I believe the guy on the phone said that he was activating that feature. No problem, I understand that. I also know (or think) that Int'l roaming would be much more expensive than if I purchased a sim card from a European company and used it with a European phone #. Has anyone taken their v400 (straight out of the box)to Europe (specifically Spain) and tried this? I have heard that the v400 comes unlocked but when ...

It should work there no problem, I used mine in Hong Kong with issue, mind you, I was charged roaming but I just had to see if it would work.
You do need the international roaming allowed features for it to work, if you don't have them(all of them) it won't work and bill correctly.

you used it with the Cingular Int'l roaming without changing the sim card? Did you try buying a sim from a chinese company and popping it in? I'd bet that would be cheaper, especially calling local Hong Kong numbers.

Dude, unless you are doctor and need to get calls, buy a prepaid sim when you get to Spain for like $50 bucks, you'll get a local number and like 500 minutes. The phone is unlocked and is quad band. will work like a charm. I am not sure if has automatic network search, you might have to go into the menu to change the frequency to 900/1800. Also, I doubt if an online retailer took care of a feature like International Roaming, If you wantto use American number, make sure you check with care before you go.
Have a nice time.

ahh...ok. I didn't read your reply before I submitted my last reply to the last reply 😁 . I think you answered my question. I'm not a doctor and there are about 2 people here that would call me there and I think I could manage to give them my Spanish number. My big concern was getting there and Cingular having some kind of lock that I couldn't use Movistar or Vodafon or something like that. Sounds like it will work great then.

The V400 is unlocked. It will work there. One thing to watch out for though, is that you need to add the telegence soc codes for international roaming before you leave, because if they are not there before you leave, they won't be able to send the appropriate updates to the phone on the roaming network. Also, yes, you should get the Spain prepay sim. Spain is probably $1.79/min roaming. A prepay sim will get you reasonable rates.

Wow....1.79!?!?!? VZW is only .65...you would get hosed there with Cingular

thanks, but to clarify my question a little bit. When I go to Spain, I usually go for 3-6 months. I don't want to use the Cingular Int'l Roaming if I can avoid it. I'd like to just pop in the same prepaid sim card that all of my friends get for their spanish phones. The reason I got the v400 was to use the same phone in the U.S. as I do in spain. Doesn't make sense to pay $300 for a phone here and then have to pay $100 for one to use there, you know? At the same time if I need to call one of my friends locally in Spain while I'm there it wouldn't make sense to spend $1.79 a minute on Cingular's Int'l roaming plan. I just hope I didn't misunderstand all of the literature. I'm tempted to drive down to Mexico since I'm in San Antonio and get on...
