If i'm adding a line to my account...and I have the device. do i have to sign a new 2 year contract even thought I already own my own equipment?
...
you can just sign a 1 yr. just make sure you specify that when you go into a store.
...
technically, in a company owned store, you can do 'no term'. The hard part will be finding someone who knows that and then finding someone willing to spend the time activating it, as it is a non-commisionable sale and commissioned sales reps don't like working for free.. Although, one could argue that is why you also get an hourly rate and you should do whatever it takes to take care of a customer, but thats a whole nother story.

If you're adding to an existing familytalk plan then you have to do a contract of at least 1 year. They might be able to change the existing plan into one without promotional features first, and then add it on without a commitment. It's my understanding that all Familytalk plans are promotional though.
...
Yeah, an hourly rate that you couldn't feed yourself with.
...
any plans with free promotions such as n&w's mobile 2 mobile have to have atleast a one year.
...
You have to sign at least a 1 year if you want free Mobile to Mobile

All I wanted to do is this:
I have a Blackberry 7290 (cingular branded) and I also have my primary phone (LG CU500). I wanted to add a Blackberry Data Only line to my account. No voice. Just use the thing as a Data device. I'm sure not going to sign a 2 year contract (since I have my own phone) and I will only be using for Data. I can get the same thing at Tmobile for $19.99 a month. I'm doing a little shopping around today. Any advice.
...
I'm pretty sure you can get that with no contract, as it's a stand alone on the same account. It would run about $49.99 a month.
...
yeah you could do that
sorry, thought you wanted to add for voice

I went into the corporate store and the associate told me that I would have to sign a two year contract. Will they activate that for me over the phone through the 1-800 #? I have an old SIM card here ....Thanks.
...
you're gonna need an unused SIM card
...
That's what I'd thought at first too. I guess that's why it always pays to ask probing questions. 🤣
Nic, an old SIM card wouldn't work if it's already been used. If it's never been assigned then you should be able to call in and have it activated. If it has, I'd just try a different store.
...
yeah but you get lazy about that in phonescoop 😉
...
You can add that on a no contract.
...
Ok. I called the 1-800 last night, and was on hold for 32 minutes. They told me they had 2 call centers down...and were a little backed up. After all that...I still didn't get to add my Blackberry to my account, because they told me that I was required to sign a 1 year contract. When I asked why, they told me that they GIVE me a phone humber, and they need to know that I will be with them for a year. I was dis-satisfied, so I hung up and called again. Waited another 20 something minutes and then talked to a guy. He told me the same thing. That i would need to sign a contract. hmmm. any suggestions?
...
Go to a different store than the first one you went to.
It sounds like the call centers have a lot of new hires for the Holiday season.
...
I tohught 1 years were required even with own equipment if they want the promo plan(mobile2mobile)?
...
He's not going for a promo plan. He wants to put it on a data only stand alone plan.
