Be Careful when switching from Verizon to Cingular!!

I almost made a very costly mistake. I am planning to switch from Verizon to Cingular as soon as my contract expires. I have been monitoring my Verizon account on line for several months now, and it shows how much time is left before I can use my “New Every Two” and upgrade my phone. I assumed that date was also the end of contract date….WRONG!! I have been anxiously waiting for that date (December 10th) so I can switch to Cingular and get a new phone. A little voice in my head told me I should call Verizon just to be sure. Turns out, that upgrade date is two freakin’ months before the contract expires!! If I would have gone in to a Cingular store and ported my numbers, I would have been hit with the early termination fee for both li...

Its a pretty common missconception that customers make. I have customers come in to upgrade on a regular basis and assume that because they are eligable they are out of contract. It sounds legitimate to me. I always tell customers planning on porting to make posotively sure that they are out of contract before conducting a port.

Be careful when switching from Cingular as well! I saw the most retarded video on youtube, it was this lady ranting and raving for 10 minutes b/c she looked online, saw she could upgrade, assumed it meant she was out of contract, even though it clearly showed her contract was up, and ported out, and was pissed b/c she got charged an ETF, and pissed b/c Cingular wouldnt waive it. Never once did she bother to call customer service, and she even admitted on video that she knew her contract wasnt supposed to be up, the thought she found a loophole!

I had a customer port a number prior to contract end date "not realizing it would cancle their contract." The contract holder came in to check and see if they were going to be charged an ETF. She then said he wasn't supposed to port the number and wanted to know if we could reactivate the line. Customer care waived the ETF in return that she start a new line of service with a two year. Pretty good deal for me and her!

Its nice to get customer service reps who actually try to solve the issue instead of blindly adhering to policy!!!

Its just sad you can't get a direct line number. CSRs should be assigned to a set of locations or something so you can look forward to talking to the same person every time.

Cingular has a lot of faults but this isn't one of 'em. Cingy allows you early upgrades as a courtesy. It would be dumb to assume that just because you are upgrade eligible that your contract would be over at the same time especially since the Cingy website shows you exactly when your contract ends. 🙄

Yeah...and that's what Verizon is doing here too. I'm not suggesting that they did anything shady. I'm simply warning others who (like me) might think their upgrade date is also the "end of contract" date. Judging from some of the posts above, I'm certainly not the only one to make that mistake. I'm just glad I checked first.

Guys, it was appropriate for me to yell right there.

I tell my customers "Making Assumptions = Big Cellular Bill. DON'T do it!"
