What do you guys do if a customer signs up, ports their number out, but tries to return the phone itself on the 31st day.

I'd go by the date he ported out. If he ported out on the (let's say) 20th day, then just take the phone back and don't charge the ETF because technically he canceled before the 30th day.

Not me. If they ported out on the 20th day, but waited a full 11 days to return it, it's his loss. But he'd probably ask for a manager and they might take it back.

30 days is 30 days. I don't bend that rule for anyone. If they complain, I get a manager and let them decide.

We're a corp store, but we still don't get credit for a phone we send back unless it was done within the 30 day time frame.

Where would it stop? 35 days, 40 days, 45 days? That's why I stick to this rule with a vengence.

I'm an agent, so I'd take the phone back.

As to if I'd give them a refund, that depends on the customer. If they're a jerk, I'll take the phone back and they'll get no money back because I can't return a phone that's outside the 30-day window. If they're decent I'll give them the moneyback minus a restocking fee of $25 and get rid of the loss some other way
