Preface:
I've had the same cell account for 18 years - from CellularOne which was then bought out by ATT Wireless which was then bought out by Cingular. I think that classifies me as a loyal customer.
I'm in a technical field which requires good analytical & troubleshooting skills, so I'm good at testing/looking for patterns with problems.
I am in New Jersey, but frequently travel via car to the south east.
Problem:
Since at least July, both my wife & I have been having problems with service on Cingular's network. People try and call us and will often get a message "Your call can not be completed as dialed. Please check the number and try again. Message 080T". The message # will vary depending on if the call...

have you gotten cingular phones ot are you still on your original att contract ?
...
Hello -
We got new phones in October of 2005. The old phones were on the old AT&T TDMA network. The new phones are GSM. My account was converted from the TDMA plan to GSM, but my wife's was a new GSM plan with a new phone #. We both have the same problems receiving calls.

...
on your phones att or cingular gsm ?
...
Cingular GSM. The phones are Nokia 6102b phones. My parents have Cingular Razr phones - not sure of the model.

...
hmmmm needs to be escalated to tier 3 tech support sorry lrn hlr something like that
...
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it is the LRN (don't know what HLR is). It is happening to more than just me. It happens to my wife, parents, etc.
I suspect that it happens to more often than people realize. I've been trying to get it resolved since July. âšī¸
...
Home Location Register...basicly its the part of the switch that keeps the information (how to route the calls, what is allowed on the phone ect..)
...
Thanks for explaining it. Hadn't heard that term before.

This kind of problem which I read day after day never happens on the verizon network.

BS. it does to happen with verizon. it happens with every carrier...
...
nah verizon might have a mild problem here or there, but nothing like this thread and countless others that I read on this forum everyday. I've had verizon for 12 years back since they were call Airtouch, never a dropped call or any problems! cingular sub par network still needs allot of work before it gets any where near verizon quality, those are simple facts that can't be disputed.
...
actually it can. and it will be in the next few months. and i've had cingular since southwestern bell wireless, and no problems. it just so happens i work for them now.
...
ive had a cell phone for going on 8 years....only time ive had connection problems is with low coverage...
...
You verizon guys always think cingys network is crap. Ive had cingy service for 6+ years. yea when GSM first came online was crap, but i wouldnt trade cingy gsm for anything. i have news for u im on these forums everyday and very rarely have i ever seen people having chronic network problems consistantly. wake up man because until you try this network out then watch what you say instead of tell people false claims
...
I have had cingular before and it failed miserably compared to verizon. but whatever the facts are verizon has the best network hands down every survey has said so year after year and im not just talking cs, every survey! but CDMA is the superior technology that is a proven fact. the facts are cingular still has allot of network busy signals, bad static problems, and poor customer service.
I bet if you put a verizon phone in the hands of every cingular customer within a week over half would port to verizon, its just that much better.
...
How do people have static over GSM? Ive heard people talk about it but ive never heard static EVER and ive had GSM since it went on in my region and thats takling on avg 4000-5000 min a month. Dont tell me whats supeior in wireless technology becuase im not going to start flaming cuz its jsut ignorant. Anyone can say whats superior and i bet 90% verizon fanboys will say CDMA is and 90% of cingy fanboys will say GSM is better. I only get mad when people say stuff that isnt true. if we had sooo many network busy signals or network problems at all our churn would be as high as Sprint/Nextel's and more people would cancel within the 30 day return policy.
...
Well seeing that I recently switched from Verizon to Cingular, I feel it is my duty to drop some knowledge. Here in the southwest, Cingular has been a better experience for me. I do not experience network busy signals, static problems, but cs is so-so depending on who you talk to. With Verizon, service was good, but from time to time, it took forever to connect and EVDO coverage was not that great. Every carrier has there great areas and poor ones, you know that much. The one thing that I find funny is that though TMO and VZ beat out Cingy in the southwest, my homies who have them seem to have more problems then I do. Thats why I take those survey results, like I do toilet paper (you know what I do with that). Those same surveys said ...

you are right, where I am at everyone with cingular would change to verizon...oops verizon doesnt have any coverage within a 49 mile radius of here, nevermind đ¤Ŗ

Actually, I think that if you give a Vz phone to a Cingular customer they'll give it right back to you... They'll get their cingular phone and go: Can you hear me now???
REASON: Plp on CDMA sound muffled. Low. Overfiltered.
Once you have a GSM phone for a while and then try a CDMA phone you'll know what I'm talking about...
...
i had cdma for years and when i switched to GSM, i had never experienced rich voice quality, i read more on GSM and CDMA, CDMA uses a crappy codec which encodes 8kpbs compared toe EFR GSM 13 Kpbs codec, it sounds so rich and i will never go to cdma again. its sounds like someone is talking underwater, everytime i talk on my sis's phone, the voice quality is horrendous to me.
...
I just switched from T-mobile (GSM) to Verizon (CDMA) and i can honestly say all this bulls*hit on voice quality is retarded...there both the same to a normal person who uses there cell phone to talk to someone. Now the real difference is Coverage...Verizon does have better coverage than t-mobile (IN MY AREA) as well as cingular...again in my area....(Long Island & Albany).
Thats it.
...
Don't listen to this vzw fangirl, this is his MO, going into other forums and spewing BS about vzw, he's just a troll.
...
to funny you are still mad that I called Sprint out on not being able to implement an Online ESN changer- pathetic company so funny
...
Yeah about as pathetic as your EVDO and VCAST đ
...
Cmon guys dont start more flame wars!
...
You meant TOO funny, did you finish grade school? đ¤Ŗ
...
Way to dodge the question again LOL
...
by the way VCAST is sick...idk what Cingular has but i doubt its as good as VCAST. none of my friends can download or even preview music on their cingular phones...cause all they have is a rainbow of razrs. thats all i see with Cinguar.

Bull. This type of thing is one of many reasons why I dumped Verizon.

Thank You! OMG golden Goddess Verizon has network problems just like everyone else!! đ˛

Really?
Never dropped a call?
Really?
Funny, thought it wasn't a problem, I dropped calls when I was with Airtouch in San Diego and Los Angeles.
Me thinks someone is exaggerating.

Verizon has the same problems if not worse. I am in NYC and my firm in in NY, NJ and CT and sometimes we get e-mails saying that we suck as a company because we didn't pay our phone bills. Come to find out, the verizon phones sometimes gives caller's the message that the phone number is not in service. Not tr...

How about dropped calls, shrinking network footprint, network noise, etc. Now I know GSM is not the best network (no flaming intended) and it has its network noise issues and capacity issues but in our market, which by the way Verizon owns 62% of the market share Verizon's quality has diminished considerably. Cingular is a better choice. I sold Verizon for several years and it was the best. The rest of the industry has caught them and is passing them. Can VZW be the next ATTWS? If it were not for "in network" and the phantom contract extensions VZW's churn would probably be above 2%. When we first dropped Verizon our customers were angry because they could not believe anything was better than Verizon. We are now porting those same customers ...

clearly you are a radio shack employee.
who dropped who again? VZW dropped you guys becuase you kept screwing up and didnt know what you were talking about.
You guys are for the most part uneducated and are non factors in the cellular industry, Verizon Wireless hasnt skipped a beat as far as Adds since dropping RS and their churn gets lower every quarter. clearly you guys pushing sprint has helped alot with all of their 28k net adds.
...
Clearly I am a RadioShack employee. I have also sold for cellular carriers as a direct business to business rep and I have been in the wireless industry in some form since 1989. So I think I know something about the industry.
It's true we have some turnover and sometimes there are problems due to inexperience. We also had some individuals who took advantage of both RadioShack and Verizon. But guess what, They all have moved to Verizon's premium retailer in the area and are doing the same stuff. So does it make fraud ethical if it is your guys?
How can the # 1 wireless retailer other than carrier owned retailers be a non factor? Number 2 is WalMart. We had a substantial decrease in 2006 and we are still #1.
To my knowledge problems for...

I agree, port to verizon wireless and step up to the big leagues as far as network performance, quality, and survivability

Uhhhhh excuse the interruption... but the topic of conversation was ME.
Seriously though, this doesn't need to turn into a Ford vs. Chevy debate. I actually have this Cingular Nokia 6102 GSM phone in one hand and a Verizon Palm Treo 700w in the other. I like them both, and don't plan on cancelling either any time soon. I use the Cingular phone for my "phone" and the Verizon Treo for mostly email & data (and to call Cingular engineers about the status of my tickets đ ). Coverage in my area is very good for both.
The reason I posted the initial question is simple - is this happening to any of you too? I'm looking for first-hand experience - not "yeah... I read a post about a lady in Tallahassee...". The engineers tell me they...

I live in Pittsburgh, PA and I have Cingular. I previously had Sprint and had few problems with coverage/dropped calls. I have had very few problems with Cingular in the eight months I've had them (most of the problems I have had were customer service related-they could certainly work on that a bit more). I don't know much about CDMA vs. GSM (I probably should educate myself since I'm employed in telesales). What I do know is coverage. For my area, Cingular seems to work well, no one I know around here that has them has many problems. I say "many" because NO wireless service or company is perfect.
...
Ive never had your particular problem recently, I had weird problems when GSM first came live quite a long time ago. Very strange for that to be happening to only you. usually if its the area they would get many calls and fix it quite soon. I almost wanna say its your phone but then again i dont!
