EDGE

This may be a stupid question, but here goes anyway. I'm deciding between an EDGE phone (it is backward compatible) and a GPRS phone. Does Cingular even support EDGE or would that ability just go unused?

Thanks

That depends greatly on your location. Cingular appear to support GPRS throughout the network, while they have EDGE available only in select areas/markets.

As far as I can tell, there is no EDGE in San Fransicso Bay Area market. However, we have UMTS with the average download speeds of 220-320 kbps with claimed bursts of up to 384 kbps that is available from AT&T wireless right now. (UMTS is also known as "wireless 3G" or "Third Generation")

My guess (just a speculation) is that Cingular will skip EDGE in California and will go directly to UMTS with the aquisition of AT&T.

Yep, that was a flaw in the profanity filter. 🤭 It's fixed now.

If you spot anything like that elsewhere in the forums, please let me know directly using the feedback forms. Thanks! 🙂

no worries. im sure with the acquistion that EDGE support will be acquired as well as UMTS. ATTWS has nationwide EDGE and 6 UMTS markets, so it should be fine to buy EDGE today and wait for it to be supported.
