Name change to ATT Wireless - can I get out?

temnik

Here's the serious question: does name change constitute sufficient grounds to terminate my contract without paying ETF?

I have very specific reasons: when ATT Wireless tracking stock (AWE) was unloaded onto unsuspecting public - and ATT was hiding the true state of their financials - I rode that dog from its IPO price of $30 to $15/share. I will not willingly give my money to anything with the name ATT on it.

The question is - can I do it now or wait until August?

If I understand the way alot of the Terms and Conditions work - for the most part: The change has to constitute a change that would be (by the eyes of a court of law) be detrimental to you or would change the way you have done business negatively..

I don't know if a court of law would recognize a name change or merger as such an event - then again, I could be wrong on the Terms and Conditions as well.. 😕

I highly doubt they would let you out for that. If they did, that'd be pretty ridiculous. If you want to get out, pay your ETF now while the company is still called Cingular. Still, to be fine with giving your money to the company now but not if they simply change their name to AT&T is a bit ridiculous.

you been giving your money to ATT since SBC bought them. Well at least half your bill since they own half of cingular!

.... he hasn't been giving any money to ATT. He's still giving his money to the same company that SBC was, they just have a new name.

Also, it wont be ATT wireless. It will be at&t.

SBC absorbed att so yes att is now apart of sbc break it down anyway you want it still is att!

the name is still att, but the company isn't. the company that was att is gone.

I think it's stupid to want to cancel just because of a name. That'd be like if Whole Foods and Wal-Mart suddenly swapped names and I stopped shopping at what was Whole Foods just because I don't like Wal-Mart.

as a Cingular employee, the name change will not affect the way we do business nor will it affect you as a consumer. The name change is just that, a name change. No one stopped using Verizon when they switched from Bell Atlantic. So i think everyone who wants to switch because of a name change have nothing else better to do than to complain about nothing.

As a Cingular Employee, the name change means new uniforms. I am kinda fond of blue. . . no procedures have changed as of yet. They choose to change the name based on the global familiarity of the name AT&T.

i understand you want to stand by principle... but, the at&t of old no longer exist. the wireless division was bought by cingular and the company was purchased by sbc(southwestern bell)... to get out of paying etf would be from...

This will not give you a cause to cancel without an ETF.

Cingular (the company that will soon be rebranded as AT&T something or other) is NOT a publicly traded company, and it's COMPLETELY separate from the old AT&T wireless (which no longer exists, from a legal & financial standpoint). Nothing about your service or contract changes, so you'd be unable to get out of the contract without an ETF.

Or you could just set your phone to roam a large % of the time and have Cingular kick you off their network for free...

You were already giving a % of your money to AT&T anyway...because SBC owned half of Cingular.

I don't understand why everyone gets so wrapped up in "a name". whats the big deal?

If your happy with your service...screw the name. Just talk on the phone. If your unhappy, cancel the contract and go somewhere else.

I know that cingular / Att would love your ETF $.

If I was unhappy with my carrier, I would just cancel and find someone else. I hear that Sprint is a good choice..... just don't leave the major highway or you will have no service.

so false. I left I95 in NC onto US 13. Nothing for miles. Was with like 10 people as we were coming back from a training exercise. The only one who had service was sprint and alltel. And no sprint was not roaming onto alltel. Cingular had no service and verizon was in extended network on alltel for a good 20 miles till we got back close to a town!

My wife uses the cingular phone and I have the sprint phone. Cingulars call quality is a little better, but sprint works in more places than cingy. Sorry fanboys, but look up your domestic coverage area.

i'm not going to debate cingular vs sprint coverage. Just look at the coverage maps. thats all i have to say. If anyone tries to tell me that Sprint has more coverage than Cingular....just look at the map. Yes, I'm sure there is one 20 mile stretch of road somewhere that has sprint coverage and no cingular coverage. but honestly, i live in the WOODS OF THE WORLD Mississippi.... and I have cingular coverage on almost every pig trail here. Sprint works only on the interstate and Verizon roams like they do almost everywhere!

The facts: Sprint was at the technology forefront back in 1992 with CDMA (digital PCS) and had camera phones before everyone else...but face it. they have fallen behind. They were years ahead of everyone becau...

They still are years ahead in data. And they have just as much coverage as cingular. Since they can roam were cingular can't. When I want to make a call I don't care if it is on sprint or not. What I care about is I can make the call. I have done what you said just the other day. In NC we left I95 and got on US13. For 50 miles we came across nothingness. Sprint and alltel were the only phones that worked. And no sprint was not roaming. ANd yes we had like 13 people in the van(military) And they had Verizon, Sprint, Tmobile, Cingular and Alltell phones between us all. They have about identical coverage. There are places cingular won't work and vice VS. Like I said bridgeport CA is only covered by Cingular. But there are others that are only c...

I could not agree more.

No carrier is perfect for EVERYONE.

I don't usually debate carriers...because this is only cell service. Not oxygen we are buying.

But, if you look at the coverage map for MS, AR, AL, and LA.... we have very very limited Sprint coverage here. So, we have to go with Cingular or a regional carrier.

Cingular has the disadvantage of being the only real GSM carrier int he US. We have noone to roam on...because Tmobile only has coverage on the interestate and major cities.

That is so true. If cingular doesn't have coverage your out of luck. I don't know of a place tmobile has coverage were cingular doesn't! I wonder if anyone knows how many local GSM providers there are and how many local CDMA providers there are?

you can go to GSMworld.com and see everyon GSM carrier and their coverage.

CDMA i have no idea where you would find that info. i'm sure they are scared to post any info.....because they are scared that qualcomm will sue. lol. qualcomm invented CDMA and they want to make sure they get all the $ they deserve.

When will sprint have EVDO Rev-A? Verizon is already launching it in almost every city they have EVDO. Sprint should have already had that. I mean...Cingular has launched HSDPA in 100 cities... and should be upping the speed to 7.2 Mps. Yum.

Rev 0 covers 150 million people right now. Rev A is going to be network wide meaning their entire network will be REV A by the end of this year. And Wimax will be deployed starting in 2008.

While I thought they should have waived the ETF when increasing the sms fee, for PR reasons if nothing else, I would have to stand with them if they denied you on this. Regardless of the name, it's the SAME company you've been giving your money to this whole time. The company's not being sold or anything like that, simply a name change. And as Juliet says, "What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

I got lucky there, I took a chance and bought a couple hundred shares of AWE when it was about $2/share and then Cingy bought them at $15 (if I remember right lol it was a couple years ago after all) 😎
