The iPhone is potentially HUGE news for the industry

I really believe that Apple is going to drive Cingular to rethink the way they do business with high end consumer customers. Instead of looking to grow revenues from selling ringtones and music, smart carries will begin to compete with services that are value creating and not simply gouging a captive base. The random access e-mail Apple showed off is a great example of this kind of service.

This high end market is small, but very profitable. And ultimately demand for these services will grow as they always do. Cingular is going to be forced to think differently if they really want to operate as a partner with Apple. That's going to be painful for management, but it will make for a much stronger company in the long run.

I agree. It has always frustrated me that cellular providers seem to focus on 16-25 year olds. A large bulk of their advertising is aimed at that market with ringtones & music. Even the majority of the phones themselves are set up more for games and music than for business. I realize there is HUGE money being spent by that demographic. But how many times do adults have to go into the cell stores looking for a reliable, serious phone, only to be shown 10 different models which are clearly aimed at kids.
