Curious Does anyone se Cingular (ATT)

Going totally WCDMA like JAPAN? As both voice and data on it?

Regardless of the iPhones release, it would be years before they sunset the GSM network.. I mean TDMA is still out there..

I would think that the UMTS/Wcdma network is doing both where its rolled out as it can do them simultaneously..

It can't do it together as I understand it. If you are on the net and a call comes in your call is put through but you can't continue with the net. I could be wrong. If I am not EVDO can do that to. If you are on the net and someone calls you it will go through!

WCDMA can handle voice and data at the same time. EVDO cannot.

so you can surf the internet and talk on the phone via speaker or blue tooth at the same time?

Japan and Korea are WCDMA/UMTS only because they never had a GSM network. Also, when you're on UMTS in the US, both voice and data are transmitted using the UMTS network. There's no connection to the GSM network except for some account management and hand off if you go out of UMTS coverage.

To answer your question: yes AT&T will probably drop GSM at some point. But it will be a very VERY long time from now (think decades).
