How long can I keep my current Cingular plan?

About four years ago, I subscribed to a charter GSM plan with AT&T Wireless (now Cingular) that offered 1,000 anytime minutes for $39/month, no roaming or LD charges US-wide. This now seems like a very good deal, based on the current plans I've seen from Cingular and others, and it seems to meet my needs really well. Since I'm no longer on a contract and paying less than current plans, I can't help but wonder when Cingular is going to decide to mandate a change in my plan that either restricts services or raises my rate.

Has anyone experienced a change in plan provisions after you've progressed from a term contract to month-to-month?

You can keep it as long as you like. The only plans we are forced to change are TDMA and Gait plans, but if it's GSM you can stay on it. It's in your contract to keep receiving the same monthly bill.

that's not right

Charter $99 Unlimited plans were discontinued. There are no guarantees for your plan since you nor anyone else who signed on to that plan are on contract anymore. You'll just have to see what happens. But until then, keep going month to month. That what I would do.

Have you listened to an IVR lately? With the contract it includes a continuing month to month service until the customer terminates it. There are many discontinued plans that customers stay on. We are now only a completely new set of Family Talk plans, but if the customers is on a previous way we can renew them on the same one. Like I said, unless it is a non-GSM plan they can stay.

That does not count for the "old att wireless" plans. The charter plans will start to be phased out around fal 2007. I know i work in customer service, formerly with the "att wireless, the cingular - now "cingular wireless - the new att"

Whats going to happen, is that the charter plan was this, the included mi...

Lately, yes.

The terms of those plans when offered were typically based on a length of contract agreement. Basically, once the original agreement was up it could technically be changed.

Now all of our current plans are different. You have to examine the terms of the original offer.

The original poster can keep that plan for the time being but it could go away without violating any TOS.

Well, despite some differences of opinion, it appears that the terms that I currently enjoy could go away soon. BTW, I don't have $99.99/mo. with 1,500 minutes and unlimited nights/wkends. It's $39.99/mo. and 1,000 anytime minutes, no nights/wkends. It was described to me as a charter plan when I first signed up and I found that it became obsolete even before Cingular bought AT&T Wireless.

I assume that Cingular will likely propose some sort of transitional offer when my current terms are discontinued. I can't believe they'd want to throw away an existing customer if they can help it. So I should probably just wait it out, enjoying the current low price for as long as it lasts.

Thanks to all those who responded.

Averagejoe, I assume that if I called Cingular and asked for a two-year contract on my current plan, they would say "no" and only offer a contract on one of their existing plans.

So...if I want anything comparable to the value of my current plan, I assume that I have to shop around like everyone else does. And if I want to continue to use the unlocked Motorola L6 that I just bought four months ago, I'll have to sign up with a GSM provider. And that means I'm restricted to either Cingular or T-Mobile, right?

I guess I shouldn't have expected this free lunch to last forever. Damn!

Go into your local store, when upgrading we are not forced to switch unless its a TDMA plan. I don't see why the rep couldn't just renew the contract using your same rate plan.

If they would renew my existing plan on a two year contract, that would presumably give me an extension on the forthcoming change that Averagejoe described. But I'd be surprised if they were willing to offer a two-year contract on a plan that is no longer being offered. Still, it's worth a try; I'll see what they have to say.

Thanks, Hombre07.

Bob,

It is impossible to extend the contracts of Legacy AT&T Wireless customers without migrationg to a Cingular GSM phone and plan.

FYI....Cingular retention department still has access and the authority to give an identical plan.

NTN 1000 - $39.99 for 1000 daytime mintes with rollover, NAtionwide with no roaming or LD. No nights and weekend or M2M. You can add Unlimited M2M for $9.99.

Good luck.

Will, it sounds like you're very familiar with Cingular's practices. Can you confirm Cingular's intent to discontinue my "NTN-1000" plan this fall, as was reported in a previous post? If it's gonna happen, I'm sure I need to lock in a contract before they announce that they're pulling the plug. But if it's not going to be discontinued, then staying on month-to-month is possibly a safer choice because I then have the flexibility to change plans/carriers if there's a significant reversal in prices in the future.

Thanks,

Bob

i agree with Will here

legacy plans are no longer available unless u can get ahold of an AT&T phone and then u don't have to renew

but otherwise
u can keep your plan as long as u like NO rep can make u change it unless u want to

i have people on Unlimited Incoming plan from back in 99 when we were bellsouth mobility...

I spoke with a Cingular rep who told me that the only things that would cause Cingular to modify or discontinue my plan were if a) they changed technology (e.g., no longer offered GSM) or b) I lost my phone. Well, "a" is highly unlikely and "b" obviously isn't true, since I replaced my phone four months ago with an unlocked Moto L6 and the SIM card works great.

Now this conflicts with what AverageJoe said in an earlier reply to my post. He stated that he's a Cingular rep and said that my plan will be phased out in the fall of this year. I'm not sure what to believe now so maybe I'll just sit tight and hope for the best.

i assure you Bob ... your plan is safe if u want to upgrade aslong as its not an AT&T wireless plan
u can keep everything on it that u had and it won't be a problem
if it is a problem then go to another store or ask for another rep
simple as that
i won't turn an activation away just cause u want to keep your plan
i could care less im gonna get paid either way

Actually, LicorShot, my plan IS an AT&T Wireless plan. It was a charter plan, offered when AT&T first offered GSM service. It included 500 anytime minutes plus a bonus of an additional 500 minutes because I was pioneering their GSM service.

Now that you know my plan is an AT&T plan, do you still think it's safe from being modified or terminated?
