Where to get music?

My next phone will be a Sony Ericsson (either w810i or w300i) and it's my understanding that they only play MP3 format. I have two sources for music downloads currently on my computer. One sends it all in WMA format and the other is iTunes. I can't use either of those...right? If I need MP3's, where's a good (legal) place to get them from? Thanks in advance.

Should be compatible with Napster & Yahoo music. But why go through that, just download the free cd ripper from musicmatch.com and it will automatically convert your music to mp3 format. Thats what I did.

I didn't know you could do that. Yes, I'm a total newb at this. So you're saying that if I download songs from Wal-Mart Music (WMA format) or iTunes, I can easily convert it to MP3 with that CD ripper?

The music you get from Walmart MIGHT work, but probably not. And the iTunes music definitely will not. You can use either Windows Media Player or iTunes to rip your CDS (no additional software needed) to mp3s on your computer, and can then transfer them to the phone.

The songs you bought online will be DRM'd - Music that is purchased from most online services (iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, etc.) has Digital Rights Management (DRM) software applied that restricts that music from being played in certain programs & on certain devices. For example, music bought from iTunes will only work on iTunes compatible devices (iPods & iTunes enabled cell phones). CDs ripped to your computer will not have DRM.

An easy way to get around DRM is to burn ...

Honestly, no... at least not legally. Almost every site that allows legal downloads encrypts there files with different rights management protection that doesnt allow you to just freely download them to different devices. There are other file-sharing programs like limewire in which you can illegally download music... but its hit or miss there as well, b/c those systems are loaded with fakes and virus's.

What he said, burn them to cd, delete original files from your pc, then rip them to your pc from the cd... thats really only way to get around that... or you can purchase the cd and rip them to your computer... no "easy" way to do it.

Thanks for being patient with me, guys. Like I said before, I'm totally new to all of this. I think I understand what you guys are saying. See if I have it right:

Step 1. Download songs from somewhere like Music Match or Yahoo Music to a folder on my PC.

Step 2. Use their software to burn those songs to an audio CD.(I assume it will let me do that)

Step 3. Delete the original file from my PC.

Step 4. Rip songs from CD back to PC.

Step 5. Use "Disc 2 Phone" software to transfer songs from PC to phone.

Is that right? At what point in that process do I convert the format from WMA to MP3?
Thanks again for the help.

emusic.com is a great site that sells all their tracks DRM free - if you're wanting to get portable music, that's a great place. Also, Amazon has a bunch of DRM free downloadable mp3s. Granted, it's usually just one sample track from an album, but there's a lot of good stuff there.

Cool! I'll have to check 'em out. Thanks! 🙂
