Insurance, pros/cons?

I did not purchase insurance on our phones since it was explained there is a $50 deductible for each repair (guess that means even if the repair is UNDER $50 as well?).

Plus, I'd be paying almost $50 a year per phone for insurance, right? ($3.99/mo.) As I've said before, I'm on a fixed income now, so I have to watch every penny. ☚ī¸

I've been told the replacement cost for my SE T637's is around $240 (got them for $99, less $50 rebate, for $49).

So, can anyone tell me your experiences with insurance, especially reps who have seen claims.

I've never had it on my other phones (another carrier) and did just fine.

Opinions, please?

Thanks. 🙂

Most customers that I have seen when they make a clsim pay the $50.00 dectible and they get a new phone of the phone that was called in on or if that phone is not avaible they will give the customer a phone that is comporatble to the cuctomers orginal phone.

Thanks for addressing that...I wondered what would happen if my phone had been discontinued.

The sales rep in the store mentioned that Cingular does NOT deal in refurbished phones, but that other carriers do (and will give you a refurbished one, instead of new). Is that true?

So, Cingular does NOT provide or sell refurbished phones at any time?

I've seen on AT&T's site that they sell refurbished ones a lot. Have heard it rumored that Verizon does it in the store (replacements).

no what it means is that through lock/line insurance the current replacement is a new phone through the store, except in the Pac Bell region (west coast) where it is direct shipment of a 12 month warranty reconditioned phone, and that is being expanded to the rest of the country. this is the same as most other manufacturers who already ship reconditioned phones

the insurance is good for higher end phones. i see a lot of people that do stupid things, and it saves them, but if you got a low cost phone, or you arent going to put your phone in harm's way (outdoor work, leaving in your car in the open. etc.) its not really worth it unless you use it often. (which the max is 2 times per year anyhow)

Bearing in mind that the minimum replacement cost, even on phones that are free at activation, is about $100, it does make sense if you are using the phone for other than just an emergency or "glovebox" phone.

What you need to weigh out is would you be in a bad situation without the phone, and are you able to pay the no contract price for a new one if you are not upgrade eligible.

Right now, I don't use it much since I'm not travelling any more, so I probably wouldn't need it. My teen son may be another matter, but he hardly leaves the house. 🙂

Thanks. Mine is supposedly about $250 to replace, and it stays in my purse most of the time.🙂
