Well first you need a UMTS handset, which should come with a new SIM for you, but it is not necessary. If you flip over your card it says 3G on the back.

I do have a UMTS handset(I bought the phone myself retail(v3xx..i know it stinks, just wanted to see what the 3G hub-bub was about and it was cheap).. when I got into an area with 3g it switched from the E to 3G and of course it does have 3g onthe back of my sim.. All signs point to this being good to go.. Thanks Hombre

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that phone, don't be ashamed! The V3xx is an awesome phone, it's quick has lots of features. It rivals my CU500, but I'm not sure that one or the other is better yet.

Some reps just get tired of hearing the same constant stuff all day (being a rep for cingular customer care must not be a very fun job) so don't be too harsh on them. Seems like the rep you got just gave the standard "25 bucks for a new sim" answer, which is correct, it just wasn't the best choice in your case.
