I don't understand, the only real difference i see between the 8100 and the 8900 is the keyboard.... and the 8900 has no camera. Am I overloooking something? Why is it hundreds more than the pearl?

I once asked someone at Cingular that very question when the 8800 arrived

the response:

"Some people will pay anything to have a QWERTY keyboard"

so there is your answer .... dumb isn't it?

The short answer is:
Bigger screen, more buttons, better processor, different target market.

Despite what many people believe, in almost all sectors busineses pay MORE for things than consumers. For instance, if I buy something from Staples online with my corporate login the prices are about 15% higher than if I just browse the site normally. This is the same for cell phones, busineses will generally pay more for the slightly better model.
Sometimes companies will get a discount in another area to balance it out, like maybe the phones are more expensive but the plans are a bit cheeper or something.

This goes all the way back to when computers first came out, maybe even farther. One of my teachers for this past semester used to work for some company and he had to buy 20 computers with their money. They were charged $10,000 each when they're normally sold for $1,000 each to consumers. They had no choice but to pay it because there wasn't a lot of companies to buy computers from when they first came out, just IBM or Apple.

If you want to be the first to get the newest model of any thing, YOU PAY. There are plenty of people on this board will pay $500 or more to get an unlocked nokia, BB, HTC, etc. Not very smart in my view. The only advantage of that is you can put in any SIM card. I only do that when I am traveling abroad.
Cell phones have very short life cycle, new models come out every day. If you are patient enough, wait for 2-3 months, and you can get the BB in much better price(eg, for free). I got my MDA for free in May with one year contract.
Just my 2 cents.
