Givin the cheaper rates and more min for your money, is it possible that t-mobile will ever catch up to at&t? Here are my reasons, t-mobile is behind on their 3g networks, by the time t-mobile rolled out edge, at&t had moved on to 3g. Also, t-mobile phones aren't the greatest. please voice your oponion

please define "greatest" with regards to phones. have to keep in mind that neither cigular or t-mobile have great phone compare to european gsm phones. people can chose to buy an unlocked phone. but why pay so much when the provider supplies phones at a cheaper rate? they may not be the coolest or the greatest but most of us don't need a phone that is capable of launching a rocket into space.
i personally don't care whether or not i have edge or 3g. i DO, howver, care for the fact that i don't have my calls dropped like cingular does.

2 of my friends in France still have Nokia 3220's and a friend in Germany has a phone that lacks even a color display! LOL

Catching up to Cingular on 3G isn't T-Mobile's priority, they are more worried about phone calls then data and are kinda going off in some interesting directions.

Different direction alright. it is called BACKWARDS

No. They don't want to catch up in that regard. T-Mobile isn't about jumping on the latest technological bandwagon. They wait to see what works before dumping billions into having crap like match.com alerts streamed to the phone.
...
Exactly. They actually care more about connecting with their customers and making sure their customers can connect with those they care about the most.
...
NO they just don't have the money to invest in 3g. Going 3g is about being able to provide business customers with mobile data solutions. It is not about match.com or about consumers it is about the corporations. They are only 10% of the wireless customers. But they bring in over 50% of the money. T-Mobile in Europe is struggling and the capital is just not there. Cingular has a backer in at&t with deep pockets. Verizon wireless is extremely profitable. Sprint/Nextel is surviving off their business customer base. But they are losing ground to Verizon wireless and to the new at&t in that department.

believe me or not, T-Mobile will start to launch HSDPA out of the box in 3-4 months in selected markets, and upgrade to HSUPA late next year
T-Mobile will launch VOIP in more markets in June and July
stay tuned

They actually do have the money to invest and to expand their networks, but they just have to spend it smartly. They could always issue more bonds to fund their network or ask daddy DT to help which they did during the AWS. T-mobile currently offers many data solutions to enterprise and many other customers with a lack of 3G network. When they upgrade their networks both capacity and coverage and data they will become a very strong player.

You are aware of the AWS auction that occurred last year, right?

T mobile isn't as established as the other companies so I doubt that they will ever catch up, but The might want to get the ball rolling soon, because if they don't people who depend on the hi quality of their phone will stop getting tmobile just because they are cheap. and on the phone side, tmobile just needs to come out with more phones as well. Sidekicks and razor type phones won't save this company. I just hope they put more focus on putting out a better product, because once the I phone comes out, the game will change and either tmobile will be trying to get down with the changes, or they will be forced to lay down to att

realize in 30 of the 50 markets in the united states t-mobile is ranked 1st or tied for 1st in reception. despite all the people who think there reception sucks. True its not the greatest as you get further out from the bigger citys but they are working on that all the time.
...
Tmobile is established. Tmobile is owned by the largest telecom company in the world, DT. Least dropped calls, best prices, and soon to be best data network. You can buy phones that are not sold by tmobile and use them on the tmobile network. The important thing is for that network to WORK.

I actually do think that T-mobile will be a stronger player as soon as it continues to build out its network capacity and coverage and roll out its HSDPA/HSUPA data network. Is it possible to catch up to AT&T? I highly doubt it, but you never know. If T-mobile can sell their higher data speed network at lower prices than AT&T then yes, but if not, then it would be very difficult as AT&T is a huge company with a lot of pricing power and economies of scale. They did score some major spectrum during that AWS which could help them in the future to deploy out that 3G network they desperately need. I actually think that Verizon soon could be in trouble especially to the likes of Sprint, AT&T and T-mobile as they will have better products and solu...

They did score some major spectrum. The truth is they still lack the financial commitment that at&t has shown. They lack the profitability that Verizon wireless has.
...
I do not think they are lacking in the spending department as they are spending money on their network both capacity and coverage but more importantly in this last AWS auction that they needed this spectrum. It seems when companies are very desperate they would spend extra. Do not forget that T-Mobile has DT, which is a big powerhouse so if they feel that their other operations globally are not doing well, they would focus more on the USA market and infuse more capital. Remember they beat out Verizon and Cingular when it came to acquiring this latest AWS spectrum.
We will see them spend more going into the future because of expanding their network coverage in the new spectrum in the AWS band that they acquired plus their already holdings...

We do have to realize that some of Verizon's profit is somewhat on the shady side. They crippled their phones thus forcing the customers to buy everything.
When I was with Verizon I did't fall for that. In fact, one of the reasons I left Verizon was because of all the crippling.
I am sure there are people out there that are willing to pay for every ring tone. I personally like to be able to send some via bluetooth.

HELLO! Does anyone read the news? Tmobile beat out EVERY OTHER CARRIER when the 3G spectrum bids came around. 4 billion dollars baby. Verizon came in with a close 2nd (not really) 2 million dollars spent. Cingular lagged sadly in 5th place, with 1 billion worth. What does this mean? domination. Tmobile has the best prices for more minutes, least dropped calls, and soon (not allowed to say when) will have a super strong 3G network that will blow the rest out of the WATER. So, catch up with the competition? More like crush the competition.
...
Whatever at&t still has more spectrum than T-mobile. So does Verizon wireless not that active in that auction becuase neither of them needed to be.
...
Very true but T-mobile is starting to creep up there into the top companies who has a lot of spectrum. After the AWS auction they doubled their spectrum holdings especially in the top 100 markets with 52.2 MHZ following Verizon whom has 53.1MHZ and following the leader Cingular with 67.6MHZ. (Sprint also had 49.8Mhz adding in the 19.3MHZ from their cable JV which is 69.1MHZ.)
I think T-Mobile will be a stronger company going into the future but it will be tough going against AT&T. I think however, they will do better than VZ.
...
I agree!
AT&T will be tough. However, a little competition doesn't hurt. It doesn't hurt to have 2 companies that runs on the same system (GSM). Many European countries have that and they all co-exist.
The world is expanding and more people are travelling. Verizon (CDMA) won't survive.
Disclaimer: This message is done with my great bias towards the wonders of GSM 🙂
...
Agree.
For all the T-mo bashers out there, it really is best to have 2 GSM carriers competing. What if T-mo loses out, and AT&T is the lone GSM company left. Shall we break up the AT&T AGAIN. HE! HE!
Disclaimer: I am a T-mo customer and long time share holder of SBC,now AT&T.
...
Competition of 2 GSM carriers is healthy.
Can you imagine is AT&T is the only major GSM carrier left in the US? They can charge for anything and everything.
And its also funny how AT&T advertises themselves as if they never broke up couple years ago. 😈
...
They beat out every carrier because they were desperate at getting this extra spectrum. I wouldn’t say it was domination I would say it was desperation because if they didn’t secure this spectrum they would be in deeper trouble going into the future even though they are doing pretty good as it is with the bigger boys.
I do not think they can crush the competition because they are way too far away from a superior network and a true 3g/4g type technology. Until then they will not be that competitive, but afterward they will be. Will they compete well against AT&T? I highly doubt it, but it is possible. I think they will do well against VZ though because they do not have a true 3g/4g technology.
...
While I think TMO is a great company, hell I have a line with them, the reason they beat everybody out is b/c they had to b/c of their lack of spectrum. ATT was in 5th b/c they did not need to gobble up the spectrum, same for Sprint. ATT received hoards of spectrum with the purchase of ATTWS and is nearly maxed out in most major markets. ATT will also have quite a bit of spectrum freed up as they end TDMA service in the coming months. As far as dropped calls and all that, it is clearly up for a debate. I live in Houston and I see their signs of fewest dropped calls but my service with ATT is better than my best friend who has TMO and he will admit to this. We both have new phones and all, so that is something that can be disputed. The...

if you realize T-Mobile has invested about $9 billion to build out 3G, the answer is clear
the 3G will open up several new markets (esp in Carolinas), and will bring in about 15 million customers (estimated)

T-mobile's is to appeal to the family based market and based on the studies, young people are the ones wanting better phones with more data. Granted Cingular, had good devices but, it has been proven that our testing is a little more indept. Which inturns delays our product launches. But for a fact our devices are tougher and are durable other that things that is our control (i.e.software issues). Again or goal is to provide communication services to our customers. Connect with the people that matters most(i.e.myFaves). For us Reception and service coverage is most important. Good question thought.Feel free to contact me...
