T-Mobile 3G?

After the last bandwith auction, there was a lot of publicity about T-Mobile rolling out 3G services in 2007. We are now more than halfway through the year, and I haven't heard a word in months (years?), no new 3G-enabled phones or any other news. Does anybody have a sense of whether this is really coming in our lifetimes?

I checked streamline, TMO has not made any official announcement concerning 3G so anything else is hearsay.

Oh, there is rumors that the Samsung T639 should be out in September, and since it has 3G, that could be a sign for some markets.

As luck, our local tower engineer came in and I asked him about 3G in our area and he responded that it's on the drawing board for a year and a half to two years...with large city markets in like a year or less.

The Samsung t639 will be T-Mobile's first 3G phone.

That publicity said 2007-2008. Each cell tower has to be upgraded to be able to do this and it takes time.

Actually, a quick google of T-Mobile 3G turns up hundreds of articles from 2005 quoting T-Mobile's Chief Development Officer saying the buildout would commence in 2006 with services launching in 2007. So, in 2005 it was 2007. Now, it's 2007-08. In 2008, will it be 2009? In the meantime, Sprint is moving on to WiMax and beyond, Verizon to EVDO rev. A, etc. I have been loyal to T-Mobile, but good customer service goes just so far. They need to get their act together.

Yes, I'm sure the reason why it hasn't been launched yet is because they've been slacking off and partying too much so of course they need to get their act together. Since you don't actually have any concept of what it takes to deploy a 3G network, such as finances/hardware/software, etc, maybe you should be a little less critical of what you don't understand. 🙄

You're right. I've never built out a 3G network, and I guess I just don't understand what it takes. (Though that's kind of like Barry Bonds complaining about reporters writing about him who've never played prpofessional baseball.)

What I do understand is that T-Mobile USA is just about the last carrier in the industrialized world (and probably a good chunk of the third world as well), not to have a working 3G network. No doubt T-Mo can take all the time they want to get this done, but they may find that their capacity constraints are much easier to deal with when large parts of their customer base chooses not to wait around for them. It's not like their coverage, phone offerings or plans are so spectacularly much better than ATT, Ve...

There are many places that AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint don't have 3G. AT&T still has EDGE-only areas. Don't get fooled by their so-called all out 3G phone launches. Heck, I bet Verizon, and Sprint don't have a pure 3G network.

I'm a VZW user and I know for a fact they don't have a full 3G network. VZW prefers to release EVDO in the PCS band only, while they did release EVDO in the cellular band in the Sacramento California & Hawaii markets. Wichita Kansas was another cellular market that has EVDO, though VZW did eventually get PCS licenses for that market. So for areas they don't have any PCS licenses, they'll usually hold off. In the case of NW Indiana, VZW never had a PCS network built out until they started launching their V-Cast service, and they built out their PCS network, by overlaying the existing cellular band towers with PCS, specifically for V-Cast. VZW has a 10mhz disaggregated B block license for the Chicago market (due to the divesture of Primec...

No, actually my son is, who is 6 years old, and he took offense so I thought I would respond.

A company doesn't give a "heads up" because that would involve projected release dates. That would set expectations and companies as a general rule don't do that unless it's a very firm date.

Also, no carrier in this country has a complete 3G network.

I'm not touchy about it, I just think that you're just another overly critical customer.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I will anyway. According to today's Phone Scoop front page, T-Mo's failure to roll out 3G is NOT finances/hardware/software and all the other aspects of network buildout that I'm too feeble-minded to understand, but the fact that the Government has not yet vacated the spectrum that T-Mo bought in the auction and needs for bandwith. This is still disappointing, particularly with AT&T announcing HSUPA and a 3G service area covering 170 million people by the end of the year, but at least it's a rational explanation.

It's not exactly T-Mobile's fault that the U.S. Government is taking their sweet time vacating the spectrum. They bid on it, they won it, but the Dept. of Homeland security is dragging their ass. That's an over inflated bureaucracy for ya. They'll probably say it's in the interest of national security or some crap. Anyway, people need to be patient. 3G is coming, that they have made clear. They've already started deploying equipment in some of the larger markets. People just need to give T-Mobile a chance before ruling them out.
