Unlocking phones

OK guys, don't get the wrong idea. I'm not hopping over to another carrier here i nthe USA when I ask about how to unlock GSM phones. I may travel on occasion internally and thus, I have the Samsung X-105 (dual-band)as well as Siemens CF62T (Tri-band). I upgraded to the Siemens CF62T at the end of last week and like it so far but would consider using either of the phones for the purpose. Therefore the need to ask.

Is it different from one phone model to the other or is it the same procedure carried out irrespective totally of the phone used?

Applies appreciated from one and all (except BluetoOrange22 - I'll ignore his pathetic discolored @$$.) 😈

it is dif for every phone, if you have service for more than 90 days you can unlock a phone with tmobile, and then every 90 after that.

What he means by that is through T-Mobile only one unlock code per subscriber (line of service) may be given every 90 days. Every phone has it's own unlock code, and procedure to do it. It is absolutely free, too.

(Notice I said through T-Mobile. Unlock codes can be acquired elsewhere, too. Some dealers have the hook up and have the necessary "flash" software, and even some companies online, a lot found through ebay sell unlock codes, too 😉 )

Do you know, are Motorolas always more difficult to unlock? I mean, do they always require a data cable, or is there a way to unlock them remotely?

Like Bizkitzingravy stated, you should be able to obtain the unlock code from T-Mobile directly.

Well motorolas are actually very easy to unlock. The only thing that differentiates them from any other phones, is that you must have the foreign sim card in the phone first before the unlock code can be entered. Most of them will automatically say "enter special code". If that doesnt automatically appear, then you have to go through some more steps and they're timed lol...like you have to enter so many keys in so many seconds...

There's not too many phones that are "hard" to unlock. You just have to either have the code, or "flash" software....

Yeah, having to already have the foreign SIM in order to unlock is a bit of a pain--who has an active SIM from another carrier just laying around?

I do... 🙂 The reason I asked in the first place was because my dad thought he was buying an unlock code on ebay a while back, and it turned out that he wasn't paying attention and the instructions said he had to ship it to New York. He did, and it eventually came back unlocked, but I thought that was a little ridiculous.

You're right man, it's is ridiculous to have to ship it for a while. You're without your phone for a few days to maybe a week with all the time it takes to go through the shipping. And these days it's almost like you're lost without one.

Not for us... we have dozens of phones floating around with different accounts from three different carriers.

Hmmm, I guess I should have been more clear in my post. I meant "what NORMAL, non-phone-geek type person has an active SIM from another carrier lying around..." 🤣

Who says it has to be yours, and who says it has to stay in there? Do you have any friends or co-workers that have another GSM provider? Perhaps if you go to a dealer and are really, really nice and ask to use a demo sim for a moment they will let you... 😉

And besides, phone geeks are the ones who don't actually work in the business, but waste all of their time talking about phones anyway. I happen to actually do this for a living. 🙂
