I just signed up for t-mobile last month so I will not be eligble for a phone upgrade for 22 months at least at a decent price so this is my question once the 3g network rolls out supposedly this summer if I were to buy an unlocked 3g phone off ebay or wherever will that work.
Right now T-mobile only has one phone that is compatible with 3g service and it also offered at att so how does this work does the carrier have to make the phone compatable to their specific higher frequency or will any 3g phone pick up the bandwidths do the carriers instruct the manufacturers that this nokia will have only that bandwidth and if it is just a question of bandwitch couldnt any phone just be modified to receive these higher bandwidths.
Please forgive me...

actually the 639 and the just released 819 are both supposed to be able to run on 3g, im sure that more will be rolled out by the summer. also, when t-mo rolled out myFaves, and again when it rolled out hotspot@home, it gave accelerated discounts to existing customers who signed up for the services when upgrading. so, while i wouldnt guarantee it, the pattern shows that they would be giving some incentive to existing customers to jump on the new technology.
