Sorry for the repost... but Iwanted to make sure everyne saw this.

So... I recently got a curve and have beenusing UMA (Wifi calling aka Hotspot @ Home).

From doing some rsearch and getting some first had exirence.. you DO NOT have to use the T-MO router. You can use any wifi conection that you have access to.

So when you travel overseas you can connect to any wifi and make/recieve calls TO THE US FREE! Now if you are making a call to the country you are in you will pay international long distace.

Just wanted to clue everyone in.

This is really great for me becuase I can add a line and ship it to my family in South Africa and they can call back here for FREE!

Later,

It seems to be the same just like any VOIP phone. That is pretty nice.

you also don't get charged long distance for incoming calls outside the US as well.
pretty neat deal, especially for $10/month for your account.

t-mobile has told us about this feature, but said to let the customer know that this is an unintended side effect of the uma, and couldnt guarantee that it would always be that way. just a heads up

That is also true, so if you have any issues with it, don't go complaining to t-mobile about it.

I work for T-Mobile and I inquired about this. I was told that you pay international roaming rates when calling from overseas to wherever even using a router, back home or abroad. Additionally, when calling overseas from the US over the router you pay international long distance. If you have info that says otherwise, i'd be interested!

This isnt officially supported by T-Mobile. It does work though, I have a customer that has an office in Mexico that he uses the Curve and UMA. He has had it since the Curve launched, and has since come in multiple times to my store. Its working perfect for him.

This is not true... when overseas you just have to dial 405-722-0531 not 014057220531 (with the coutry code)... So therefore it won't be charging you roaming.... if you don't beleive me just google the subject.

I know first hand, versus you "hearing it from someone".. no offense...

He's just a policy reader. It's not neccassarily suppose to not charge you; its just a little, but awesome glitch.

I do see any sort of fix for it either. if you are in a unlicensed mobile area, how could it charge you?

You know it first hand? You said you were thinking of doing it, so where's your first hand knowledge? Sorry, I heard it from a t-mobile employee! If it works, great! If that's not the case, then I hope you get spanked with a major bill....with offense.

Woah...easy there buddy.... simmer down... don't get your feelings hurt becuase you post hearsay in this forum, and then someone refutes it.

If you read my posts I said I was looking into it becuse I wanted to send a phone to my family... well... I did.....My brother-in-law flew there and took an unlocked UMA phone.... so how else would I know about the dialing??????

Also I have read some first hand posts of people even making international calls and them not even showing up as a charge on their bill. This is different than "your" hearsay becuase unlike your "informant".... they have actually used this service in this manner.

Did your T-mobile employee actually go overseas... or is he reciting some banter he read in a memo?

😁
