I am thinking about switching to TMobile and have been reading the boards and I'm confused about Roaming.
I know TMobile has coverage issues but if roaming is free on national plans and at&t is the roaming network in PA then why would coverage be an issue? Surely between TMobile and at&t networks coverage would be acceptable.
WHAT AM I MISSING????
...
keep in mind you can not roam in your home area. YOu either have a tmobile signal or no service. Outside of that they have coverage with ATT and jsut about any other GSM network in the US.
...
So the home area is regional? So if I live in South Central PA and I am in the Mountains of West Virginia and at&t is the only signal then I roam and it uses my package minutes?
Another reason I am considering a switch to TMoblie is to drop home phone service and use the Hotspot@home service. Assuming I have 1 to 0 bars of signal in my home then the WiFi connection should be stronger and I should experience a constant switching back and forth?
Sorry for all the noob questions but I just want to make sure I have it straight in my own mind

Your phone will connect to the wifi connection before the GSM signal. The hotspot@home service is great.

wom is a little confused on this subject. what he is refering to is if you use your phone for about 6 months and 100% of your usage is on another carrier t-mobile will let you cancel your service with no ETF. you can still roam just fine, anywhere, globally.
There are no roaming charges nationwide, so yes it will just use your whenever minutes like normal.
The Hotspot@home, or talk forever mobile, will give you better coverage everywhere, especially your house. anywhere there is an open network wifi or hotspot location, you phone will automatically pick up of that and give it reception. it seemlessly tranfers between the normal network towers and the Wifi, whichever is stronger. With the H@H addon, you will get unlimited calling from a...

I think I do have it straight now, thanks. 🙂
Do I have to use TMobile's router or can I use my own? I also not clear on whether it's the phone or the router that alerts the PSTN to switch your calls through the internet connection or the tower network
...
You can use your own router, but T-Mobile prefers you to use them, mostly because they prioritised more bandwith to your phone rather than the internet. Their routers also make it easier to set up the H@H link between your router and handset.
Its the UMA feature of the phone that "alerts the PSTN". thats why you can use your own router.
...
So their router is using QoS and has the QoS config'd for the phone?
That would be an easy change on my router
Thanks again for the info it's been appreciated

American Airlines and Virgin Airlines are starting to let customers connect to wifi in flight.... therefore you could use yer phone on the flight.... boy that would piss people off huh?..lol
One more cool thing is you can go outside of the country... connect to any wifi you can... and make free calls back to the US. =)
Just don't call the country you are in using UMA or you will be charged international long distance since the call goes through the internet then comes out in the US
...
.....are you 100% sure about calling from a different country on wifi to the US? That sounds way too good to be true, and I haven't heard that about H@H before.

no I am not confused as you say. Like in Beaufort sc. If you don't get a tmobile signal you have NO signal. If you try and connect manually to ATT or Suncom even it will not allow you if Beaufort is your home area. That is what I am saying. So tmobile customers in Beaufort have no signal if tmobile can not reach your phone. Understand now?
